Tuesday's ride with a friend couldn't have been more of a contrast to Sunday's soakfest - lovely sunshine, blue skies, a gentle breeze and warm enough to wear shorts and leave the jacket in the saddlepack all day. Almost perfect, in fact ... shame about the clipless moment at a junction just yards from my friend's house. At the last moment, she saw a car coming and slammed on the brakes. My attention was elsewhere so ended up using the back of her leg to stop my bike instead of more traditional methods, and then finished it off by toppling over sideways in a less than dignified manner.

The bike was fine (first thing I checked), as was her leg, but my knee was a bit tender and is now sporting some beautiful bruises. But on the plus side, it wasn't raining and the somersault earned me a slice of homemade cake. :hungry::mrpig:

Today was a ride of two halves. This morning involved a leisurely 5 mile loop from around town, just to get some air in my lungs really and soak up the sunshine, which was in total contrast to yesterdays hellish downpours. I just pottered around taking pictures along the sea front. I left out the urban decay along the coastal road.

Fresh fish on sale from the fishing boats on the beach…why am I eating Pasta again tonight??

Then I decided the sky looked trustworthy enough to set off inland and get some miles in, so it was off on a regular 40 mile loop up through Storrington and over Houghton hill, Arundel and back.

The bike felt quicker and more solid after five new spokes were fitted. This was also the first ride with race blades fitted, and they were fine until I stopped to ask a stranded cyclist if he was ok, then promptly bent the raceblade wire and immobilized myself temporarily!

There was only one dozy driver, who would have flattened me from behind hand I not swerved in to avoid a pothole…way to close…and I was in full sexy hi vis as well.

It’s been a lovely sunny day here, bit windy from the west which is the best direction for this loop as it blows me back. ..I think I came back to soon.

The reverse ride from Tuesday's effort today, leaving north Norfolk for the Suffolk/ Cambs borders. Only 40 miles, but with quite a headwind for most of it. Funny, I had the same on Tuesday, heading the opposite way- how does that always seem to happen?!

The long old hill up to Syderstone from South Creake was particularly tough- I must weigh my fully laden bike one day, but with laptop/ files/ clothes/ food, drink and repair kit on board- it must be quite heavy. By the time I got to West Newton, on the Sandringham Estate, 15 or so miles in, I was a little weary.

This is West Newton Church looking lovely in the sunshine - This is where the Royal family attend services over Christmas which the TV news sometimes shows.

It's a fine corner of Norfolk this, where the traditional red brick and flint of the county, give way to beautiful red carrstone.
Dropping down into King's Lynn I had time at the station for a brew. King's Lynn station Caff make the best tea. I challenge anyone to find better- proper pot and all. Lovely.

Then the short hop to Ely by train. The cathedral looked good as ever from the riverside cycle path. There'll soon be a massive bypass going right through here, wrecking this beautiful veiw, just so tw*ts in cars can get to Newmarket 5 minutes quicker. Brilliant - can't wait.

Talking of idiots in cars, there did seem to be a fair few about today. Not all the d*ckheads were on 4 wheels though - a motorbike passed me near Lynn at what must bave been 70 mph within a foot of me. And then, at Burwell Lode, just past Wicken Fen - this half wit was busy tearing up the cycle path.

Still, I wasn't going to let the morons spoil my day, another cracking ride and I was home by 4pm after 4 hours or in the saddle.

Took a turn out round the hilly side of the Hills today. Lovely day - nice and autumnal. Farmer type peeps are quite active and in places they haven't been cleaning up afterwards. One descent was slippery due to liquified slurry. Very dangerous. I managed to avoid falling thankfully. Found a new cafe which was advertising CAKE. Must call in and do the sampling thing sometime.

My pace seemed to stay in the brisk zone quite a bit of the time. Not so on the ups tho' - but c'est la vie.

Returned around the southern end of the Hills (started rounding the northern end) and finished off through some lovely lanes. Hardly saw a soul all 52 miles except where I had to cross or use minimal bits of main road. Lovely stuff.

Did my usual volunteering run to the National Trust site at Styal/Quarry Bank Mill happily beating the gridlock from my house all the way to Stretford where I came across the aftermath of a moped verses car under the M.60 motorway .Poor rider was still in the road with medics and Police around them, hope they are Ok.Other than that the ride to and from Styal was nice and the weather played ball aswell.

After yesterday's thoughts of whether to go Road or MTB today, I decided that my Defy 2 needed its wheels turning more than the other bikes. They've had a fair bit of exercise recently!
I rode a variation on my regular routes as I fancied a bit of a change. Always good to discover new villages and roads.
This is a short stop at Odell (I'd never heard of it until I passed through  )

It's a beautiful little village

Another place I found that I will have to return to with a fishing rod and a worm or two is this mill-race....

The route crisscrossed the Three Shires Way at several points and I almost wished I was on the MTB as it looked as though it could have been fun to take to the woods and fields!!

Never mind, next time, eh ;)

Coffee and Cake beckoned, so I aimed for a favourite watering hole in Salcey Forest and rested for 20 mins or so with a coffee and their wonderful home made cake. Thoroughly recommended at only £1.70 for a large slice.

BTW That's a real coffee bean stuck in the top to prove that it's Coffee Cake

As I was on 40 miles at this point, I was thinking of aiming for home, via a mates house at 52 miles for a cuppa and a chat, then set my sites on getting 62 miles in for a Metric Ton. I had to add a loop at the end via Sywell and Overstone to add a mile or so, but I made it

Well that's the third ride completed!
10 miles.

I took a slightly different route, still couldn't beast the hill on the way back so did the walk of shame up it...

Encountered a few mad dogs who wanted to eat my wheels :stop: (stopped by their owners I may add), some little kiddies on scooters who thought it would be fun to challenge me to a race  and an old guy ambling along and wavering all over the place.
I duly slowed and rang my bell. Nothing.
I got nearer and rang it again, still nothing.
By this time I was was almost at a standstill and in danger of doing one of those slow-motion falling sideways things that I do quite spectacularly!
So, I shouted really loud 'excuse me please!!' He removed his earphones and heard me....

Average speeds were between 10 and 11.5 mph, top speed (under my own steam but not sustained for any decent length of time) 13.7 mph.
On the way back the average dropped to 9 and on the inclines...5

Feet are now up while I partake of some Vanilla Chai tea then I'm heading for a bath.
