Your ride today.... (part 1)

Yesterday's ride was interesting in the sense that if you were riding with someone else it was a good idea to stay close or you lost them in the mist. Today was a different kettle of fish and I would describe it in two words, wet and colourful.
I can never work out why, when you look at different websites that have Met Office forecasts they give different predictions. Nevertheless all of them gave a dry outlook with just one saying a 32% chance of rain at 1pm. After a lazy early morning reading the paper and drinking coffee we finally dragged ourselves out just after 11am. Dress was longs and windproof jackets. We almost immediately met up with one of the up and coming road racers of this area so rode together for about 30 mins, at which point the rain began, sensibly our friend peeled off for a shorter route back.
We had no stop planned but after 25 miles or so we discovered a new cafe that had just opened [we have a lot of cafes]. Around the side of the cafe there was a milk machine associated with the adjacent farm that was dispensing milk for £1 per litre, how good is that! wish we lived a bit nearer.
The rain was falling steadily now so we only stopped for 5 mins to demolish a cake as the cafe side had closed about 10 mins ago. We were now getting seriously wet so it was heads down and keep the pace high. By the time we got back there wasn't any part of us that was dry, socks had to be wrung out and everything went straight into the washing machine. Really enjoyed it, cleaning the bikes took 2 mins, the advantage of riding fixed in bad weather cannot be underestimated.

Must get a camera that picks up the colour better, some beautiful hues out there today, fingers crossed there will not be any gales this week so they are still there for our CC ride next Sunday. I should probably have kept quiet.

It's an area I've ridden round a lot over the years, theres a lovely cafe round the corner from the visitors centre at Whitemores Antiques in Shenton and the station on the battlefield line at Shackerstone is also worth a visit.
Agree Dave, have used them both in the past, both a bit unusual.

Big al seems like your due some cycling karma for all those good deeds nice to now there nice helpful people out there

I always slow down and ask if someone is OK and normally you get a cheers I am OK reply. Today it seems I was in the right place at the right time. I remember many years ago when I was pumping up a tyre after a puncture and snapping the valve off and someone giving me a tube. Ever since I always carry two and patches as you never know when you may need to do the same. To be fair the fella did ask for my number to replace it but I told him to return the favour to someone else and pass on the good will. We are all cyclists from a 50 pound knock around bike up to the racing snakes on their 10 grand carbon monsters.

With elderly Mum ill, I didn't ride much last week...... but... today I did attend a social Sky Ride in Cambridge. Now for those of you who don't know... This area has been left in the cold as usual and Sky Ride only arrived in October....:banghead:
This ride was number 3 and the last one for 2014 ........ This ride was 7 miles long and took us from Abbey Recreation Centre to Baits Lock and return.....The weather was damp and foggy then a partial lift of fog... Easy ride, along the towpath, littered with Pedestrians, runners, other cyclists and Dog walkers with unruly hounds as well as retractable leads.... I went with a novice cycle buddy from the "Wheelers" and she enjoyed herself...
Good to see Sky Ride/British Cycling coming to East Anglia....the Wheelers Thursday Ride Outs get enough people asking "what is going on"... "Who are you"... "can we come along"...without the big money machine behind us.......
Out again Tuesday..... Road Bike if the weather works out...

Went out with my cycle club today. There was a novice level ride and a medium level ride. We both set out together, about 9 in total. Weather was good, but the lowest temperature my cycle computer recorded was 9.5 so there was a slight chill in the air. We got to the tea stop after 7.5 miles at Iron Action garden centre. Christmas was in the air and the coffee shop was selling these lovely Snowman Brownies:

Then after our tea stop, 4 of us headed back to Bradley Stoke and the other 5 continued onto Hill. I'm still taking the Mirtazepine for my depression which causes tiredness and some dizzy spells, so I headed back to Bradley Stoke. All in all we did about 17 miles, quite an acheivement for me at the moment.

Hugs

After finishing w*rk this morning at 01:45, my planned meeting up for a ride at 08:30 was going to be a challenge!
Ne'ertheless, the alarm sounded for me to shift my carcass at 07:00...

7.1 miles today, usual route as the threat of snow and wind made me ride close to home. To say nothing of the temps, which were around 0 C or 32F most of the day. No great amounts of snow materialized, but it was still cold enough to freeze my hands pretty well, despite gloves under mittens. Nothing much to see, except for the usual grey and brown landscape. Perhaps when it gets going, I shall ride down to the Kringlemarkt and post some pictures then. The Trek 800 doing fine service as a winter bicycle, slow but reliable.

Todays plan was to reach my 2000 mile target for the year, but the weather refused to play ball:sad: Now whilst I will go out in the rain on my physio days, I tend to wait it out to see what happens. All morning it was :rain: so I held on until the worst seemed to have passed, then headed out just before midday. No route in mind, so I ended up going through Chertsey, planning to return alongside the river at Laleham. When I got there the road was closed, so instead I took Littleton Lane then through Laleham towards Ashford for a change. Turning back towards home I passed my old school, and the house I grew up in until I was 15 years old before ambling through Staines and off towards Virginia Water. My late start caught up with me now, and despite pressing on (for me, at least...) I realised that the 25 mile target was not going to happen as I needed to get home for lunch and dog walk with SWMBO.
Not to worry, I'm now only 4 miles short of my target:smile: Roll on Thursday...

Edit:- Jus noted my Veloviewer thingy recokons I've done over 2000 miles this year, methinks it is counting the walking efforts too.....

it does. you have to turn off the walking, but it does not remove what it has already cached, so don't bother turning it off until the new year... (in the update page when you let it work out that there is an update, a box momentarily arrives that includes a tick for cycle and a tick for walk. wait til the options disappear and then click on the show options - makes life easier.

I rode the Rossendale MTB Challenge once when it sent us through a disused railway tunnel. I could see daylight at the end of the tunnel and thought it would be easy to ride towards the light but I found it really hard to keep my balance and steer straight in the dark. I kept veering to one side or the other and colliding with the tunnel wall!

Me too, in a tunnel near Bristol. can't remember whether it was the Strawberry line or the Bristol to Bath railway path .... just remember I was finding it almost impossible to keep going in a straight line. You just seem to keep wanting to look down at the bars instead of at the horizon. Found another one in Birmingham seriously spooky. If there's one tunnel you don't want to wobble about in, it's a narrow one with a canal at the side of the path.
