I didn't fancy going out today, the alarm went off at 5.00am, it got switched off. I could hear the wind howling so I snuggled into my lovely warm bed and turned over.

17 hours later, the wind was still howling, leaves blowing everywhere, I was bored stiff! Bike kit on, out of the door towards the horizon. How can you go out, ride in a large circular route and still have a wind blowing hard into your face? 46 windy but warm miles in the end.

The thing that made the ride was hurtling along a busy rural road and meeting a barn owl. I don't know who (whoooo) had the biggest surprise. I looked it straight in the face for a split second as it took flight, no more than two feet away. Things like this make it worth while going out, no matter what the weather. Seeing it put a big grin on my face for the rest of the ride.

13 miles this day, my usual route to the grocery store with extra miles to make it worthwhile, although the shopping list was a pannier strainer. Second day of great loads have just about done these cheap box store panniers in, I'm afraid, but i never expected them to last this long anyway. Fuji is about due for a teardown and overhaul, and I'm going to use my old Sunlite Panniers with the Trek 800 until spring, and the arrival of something better, pannier-wise.

Perhaps Duncan Birt is now 40?

Well done on finally tackling your imperial century!

At some point perhaps you will fancy having a go at a 200 km audax? Maybe a bunch of us could get together next summer and do one of the ones in relatively flat Cheshire as a 'permanent' (choose our own time/date) ... There are quite a few CCers in these parts who would fancy it. And also @potsy, who would probably have to be bullied into it but he is only small, so that shouldn't be difficult!

I quite fancy getting an imperial century in again but daylight hours are running out and it is a bit windy at the moment so I might leave it until 2015 if the wind doesn't drop soon.

Count me in!

Yesterday we had a relaxing ride down the Blackwater Valley path and onto the Basingstoke canal. 27km. Not far I know, but most enjoyable

Well, we would only have to average 15 kph including stops so that shouldn't be a problem! If we did it in mid-summer and started quite early, we could take our time and still get back in daylight.

The main thing is to be comfortable enough to spend that amount of time on the bike.
Even I am considering it now. I really must do my first imperial century some time soon and see how it goes.

Usually if you can ride 70 miles on your own, you will get around 100 in company.
We're talking 200kms though. I'll definitely be doing some more 100 milers before tackling ColinJ's next round of torture!

Talking of, shall we start a new thread?

To do the 'ton' you have got to have a good set up on the bike & a proper comfortable saddle; the rest is all in the mind.

(Wish my body would let me do another one.)
I can't help noticing a slight contradiction there!

I was thinking of starting a thread at the start of February for our Glasson Dock ride at the end of March. Once we have finished discussing that one, how about starting the 200 thread in early April, aiming for the ride to take place one weekend in June?

I know we have started discussing it here but we could just keep the idea in mind and put it on the back burner for now. (On my hob, the small 'simmering' ring is actually on the front, but let's not confuse matters!)
