I've been absent from the my rides today for the last month because of being generally under the weather and then having an op 2 weeks ago. I've been back in the saddle since Sunday managing to get 3 rides in since then, but today I finally had a photo to go with a ride, so thought I might rejoin the thread.
Sunday was a leisure ride, as was Monday, though yesterday had a target and I was running late, so couldn't stop of photo anything because I had to be at my OH's work place for a certain time and there was this headwind... so today was back on the slog  ride over to my parents' home for some door repairs and some gardening. Going out was uneventful though I did see the man on the road trike and got a cheery hello from him, and also find out that the council have finally gotten around to surface dressing several miles of one the lanes they had patched  (horrible...) coming home was warm and sunny right up until I looked to the right (north and east towards the Pennines)...

Not a chance of getting home before that arrives. In fact I had barely managed another 10 minutes before it started raining and I suddenly remembered that my iPod was not in a waterproof bag... time to stop and deal with that and get my waterproof top on. 10 minutes later and it was hammering it down like there was no tomorrow and I am now doing the drowned rat look with full lights on because visibility is down to 10-15metres! 20 minutes later and oncoming cyclists are looking at me wondering what on earth is happening down the road. The roads are dry, its not raining, it does not look anything like above, the sun is trying to come out, blue sky can be seen to the west and I'm doing a cartoon act of a drowned cyclist leaving a water trail behind me. Not a stitch of clothing (despite my waterproof top) is dry and my boots are full of water. The rain caught me back up as I got to my front door, so my bike and I rode straight into the kitchen. My OH can complain all he wants, if and when he starts cleaning the kitchen floor. She's in the house for the night and that's final (also he's not home yet )

http://www.strava.com/activities/157613467 69.0km :sun: on the way out, and a slow average because of a nasty headwind home (not to mention that :rain:)...

Well, it has been nice and sunny all day in this part of the Pennines. I know that @potsy had rain in Manchester too, but for once we got away without it here!

Decided to head out for my 10 mile loop (I call it that but it's actually 11.2) today, of which part of the ride is on cycle paths, which are becoming slightly overgrown. Thought I'd take some photos and tweet the local council and Sustrans to see who needs to do a bit trimming

Bit dodgy when heading round the corners in the top pics as you're right in the middle and can't see around the bend, the fallen tree is in the middle of a fast downhill (or slow uphill depending on direction)

Even allowing for the slowing and pic taking (and having to slow down for a horse and cart) still managed 11.2 miles at an average of 15mph.

Just back in from a nice 20.3 miles in 1:26:04
I went off on my usual route out through Wreningham and then on to Hethel, through the cyclepath and then off to East Carleton and beyond. When approaching Eaton I decided to go to Keswick instead and ended up at the Norwich end of the A140 for 100 yards when I turned off up Hall Road and then rode along the city ring road to Earlham 5 ways. I could have headed straight to the hospital from there but rode down Bluebell Lane to Eaton instead, as I was still early for Hubster to finish dialysis, and then to the hospital via Roundwell road and roundabouts. I had to to a wee lap of the hospital link road to make up the 20 miles. It seemed rude to stop at 19 and a bit.

Nice ride but a bit parky at the end. My feet were very cold.

I did another 15.5 miles with a mate on our MTBs round Christmas Common and the Wormely estate. Fantastic downhills singlet racks and byways and I had a crash, so now I have a hurry arm, but I'll be ok, a lovely warm evening and at the end a pint of homemade ginger ale down the pub and a half a pint of peanuts, mother back home for dinner and a bit of Luther on the telly.

61.5 miles altogether for me today, I'm a bit Jacobs'd!

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Another sunny day, and another morning on the bike. For the last few days, I have been looking at google trying to find a flat(ter) route to cycle and I have finally found it. Not only is the lane flatter, but it goes on for miles. So today my ride startes in a nearby village. The pub is always a good place to start.

beside the pub is the lane that i chose. Under the bridge, and the lane stretches for miles

its a very quiet lane and apart from 2 cars whose drivers waved to me, it was a very quiet and peaceful ride.

like most of Wales, water isnt far away. This stream ran alongside the road. The photo below, gives you an idea of just how busy the lanes get around here.

all in all, a very enjoyable ride, in very quiet and sunny countryside.

Doug and I got out for what will probably be his last ride before the BHF ride at the weekend (might be mine too).

Nothing too energetic this time - a 20 mile route, into town then round in a loop through Uffington, Upton Magna, Atcham, Condover and back home.

At the start Doug seemed rather on the slow side. I found myself looking back and wondering where he'd gone several times during the first three miles but he perked up a bit by the time we got to the Quarry.

The route alongside the river was very pleasant today and not too busy unlike at the weekend so we were soon out of town and following the path along the former canal. Uffington and Upton Magna came and went without incident before a nice fast run (20mph+) down the slight descent into Atcham where we had a water and photo stop.

Just after leaving Atcham I noticed an odd clunk coming from Doug's bike. We stopped to check it over but I couldn't find any obvious fault so we carried on but within a couple of miles it was clearly getting worse.

We made slow progress on the lumpy section then had a swift run after Condover where Doug impressed me by maintaining a steady 19 mph most of the way between there and the A49.

By the time we got back the noise had become a thump that reverberated through the frame. I suspected the bottom bracket and as I just happened to have a new one the same size in stock, was able to do a swap - it's now silent. Glad it did this before the weekend.

20.1 miles at 12.7 mph average. Happy with that. I think Doug will do alright on Sunday.^_^

Quiet down in The Quarry. Looks like the next event is being set up.

Returned from ride to discover cake wrapper in the Greyhound's basket. Hubster didn't put the cake in the cupboard. Heigh ho, it was coffee and walnut cake and far too yummy to be in our kitchen anyway. I had told him, before the ride to eat it, feed it to the dogs, take it to her downstairs, anything. Just get it gone. Seems the Greyhound must have heard us.

Nice ride from home to Wreningham, Hethel, East Carleton and Ketteringham. Then back to Wymondham and a bit of cutting through the bike lanes and then around a bit via the gorgeous old graveyard and past the station to make up the extra mile and a half to complete 15 miles. That makes 100 miles this week. I said that it would be too mortifying to have ridden 99.8 miles this week and put the bikes away etc and then discovered it, hence making sure that we did the extra.

15.15 miles in 1:10:12 (had hubster with me. Normally whip around this ride in an hour). Nice to chat in the evening sun. Himself was enjoying himself, which is a bonus.
No ride tomorrow as its "crisps at Swaffham" night

One of those go where the nose takes you ride for me today, which ended up along the Thames Path from Runnymede, this time heading upstream towards Windsor. The path was not in the best of shape, no doubt from the flooding, but it was also really overgrown, so I spent 3 miles from Runnymede to Old Windsor Lock being stung and smacked round the face by bushes various. Opened out OK at the lock though.
25 June 2014 Old Windsor Lock.jpg

On from here to the first river crossing at Alberts Bridge. Bit of a funny spot as it's roads every which way, so I headed on into Datchet, then back over the river on Victoria Bridge. Riding into Windsor I passed the dog show, then popped up the hill to the castle. HRH was home, but unable to offer a cuppa as apparently out walking the corgi's, so I had to settle for half a flapjack and a bottle of water from my supplies. Never mind, maybe next time....
Out of Windsor and of towards Ascot, before entering my usual WGP haunt through Rangers Gate. A coffee stop for me today, unusual simply because I'm tight, so £1.90 for a coffee is a bit of a treat! That was at 17.5 miles, my target being 20. Felt really good though, so an extended lap out through Deer Park before home. I got home after 3 hours riding, the longest time since episode 3, and 30.5 miles, the longest distance since episode 3. Not getting any faster, just keeping a steady pace and upping the distance a bit each week.
Friday looks a bit wet, but I'll be out rain or shine because I have to....

I don't ride in the evenings as I'm usually too tired, but I had a frustrating evening so decided to hop on the bike.
My usual loop took me around Helix Park and the Kelpies,10.5 miles.
Nothing much to say...I held a steady speed most of the way and averaged between 12 and 14 mph....good going for me!

On the way home I got up cemetery hill with a little more ease than normal.
Then the incline into the village....it does slow me down a lot, but this evening I was struggling but I put my head down and plodded on, blaming it on being tired before I even set out.
I got to the top and looked down at my handle bars....the right indicator was showing '7'...ok, that's fine.
The left...'3'. WTF!! No wonder I struggled!!

Still, it blew some cobwebs away which was very much needed tonight.
Oh, and my legs hate me.

No photos from todays ride, it was a steady 21.2 miles, testing out a steady pace. I've set myself the target below for 2014 and I wanted to see how fast I'd manage if I didn't push myself (and get tired quickly). I sat up in my seat and took in my surroundings, checking out the countryside, because if I''m cycling through Northumberland I don't want to be all head down and go for it and miss the scenery ;) My estimated moving time is based on my current average of 14.3mph over the last 4 weeks, which includes some under 10mph average rides with my wife/daughter. Today I averaged 14mph at a speed that didn't tire my legs out after 20 miles so as long as I can keep that kind of steady pace going over the whole ride I should be OK. This will be the furthest I've ridden to date, currently at 70 miles for my longest and my legs were very tired at the end.
