Out for a look at Mow Cop - took two runs at it, but just didn't have the legs.

No chance of actually getting up the ramp today - I was struggling on the approach. So I rode back through Mount Pleasant, along the road towards Biddulph. Lovely views, spoiled by prolific littering in the laybys.

On the road to nowhere
No ride for me today but managed to get out for a run this morning. 9.6km at an average of 5mins/km, the best being 4.18.

I haven't been running as much because of riding and was absolutely shattered. I've challenged myself to 2 x 6am runs and a 50 mile ride before Saturday when I head to Skeggy for a week, taking the mtb obviously

Here for rides.
Set off aiming to do 111 miles, hoping maybe go on to 200km. Settled for 104 miles. Gearing which gets me up Duncton and Bury Hills is too low on the flat and as I was riding a singlespeed well ..... Ended up with three others joining me, none of whom had done 100 miles before. Two of whom just graduated so I am 30 years older than them. Dad of one of the boys came too and I am ten years older than him!

06h00 meant very quiet roads and we were up and over Duncton by half nine. Brunch was taken on the seafront in Littlehampton. Pub sandwich at Kirdford boosted morale and energy.

Glorious day to be riding a bike on the country lanes of Surrey and Sussex. 19.7 kph moving average. Too much time lost by one of the youngsters who fell off four times!

I was up early and decided to do a bit of washing, get it on the line, it'll be dry by the time I'm home and earning serious brownie points from my lovely wife.
I decided to do a ride I've been meaning to do for ages. From Home (Grange over Sands) to Kirkby Stephen, about 80 miles in total.
It was a lovely ride, at times without seeing anyone at all. At other times loads of other cyclists. There didn't seem to be that many cars, maybe they were all at home having a BBQ.
I passed this building and had to double back to check I had read the sign correctly

Had a lovely ride today with the OH, haven't cycled for 2 weeks!!

We went to Bedgebury - not a HUGE fan of off road cycling - however, took my lovely hybrid and I LOVED it....OH went on the hardcore course whereas I did the sedate trails. LOVELY hot weather.....plenty of tanned bits :sun:

Covered around 8 miles, nothing in comparison to my usual road distance.

The Mrs decided last night that we were to ride as a family today, so after an early start getting the bikes in/on the car, it was cornflakes and off! Parked up at Savil Gardens and nice to see we beat the rush of kids on scooters etc. Only the 2nd ride this year for SWMBO, so kept it flat (ish), heading to the Totem Pole then round alongside the lake to the Cascades.
22nd June 2014 Cascade.jpg

Heading on round to Blacknest Gate and onto the Park roads, it soon became apparent that there was a horsey event of some kind, judging by the number of horse trucks and Range Rovers (to be fair, all gave us lots of room).
Approaching the polo club is the only proper 'hill', fondly known as Breakheart Hill. It's a pet hate of mine, short and sharp, and sometimes spoils an otherwise good flat ride. My son and daughter (ages 9 & 7) got up it with no issues, whilst Mum got the gears wrong and tried to get from the granny ring to the middle halfway up (wrong thumb moment), resulting is a jammed chain/front derailleur. Quick fettle had us running again, and then we found the horsey event. Big, horse and carriage event. Normally we are used to seeing horse and carriage runs around the park, where most of the carriages are a bit tatty. Today was the opposite, with horses, carriages and riders/drivers all done up to the nines in proper gear. Just one example

Whilst not my cup of tea, it was all quite interesting. Struck me as a bit like dressage (I think?) but with carriages. Event the way the passengers sat seemed to be being judged. Very busy along here, and nice to get away back towards the car.
A very sedate 5.6 miles, less than I'd like but always great to get out with the family so the longer run can be done in the morning.

Not much cycling for me today, just a park and cycle from Newbridge park and ride in Bath, along tge river path to the Bath Artists Studios and back. I was doing another bookbinding course and today made a "perfect binding, case bound book". I used quotes as the technique used is known as perfect binding, honest guv, you can google it. The book is in my press here at home while the glue goes off.

Just a short trip into town with my brother and sister to see the Shrewsbury Half Marathon.

Jen hasn't been on her bike for ages - partly put off by an uncomfortable saddle. I offered to let her try one of the Charge Spoons that I have lying around (having not got on with them myself) and she seems to like it.^_^ It might help persuade her out on a few more rides this summer.

There was a good turn out for the event, possibly better than the first one last year. I hope it becomes a regular event.

While watching at Longden Coleham I became distracted by several motorists arguing with the marshal at the road closure. Honestly, if some folk had their way there would never be any events in town, just so they could keep whizzing round in their tin boxes.:headshake:

A fun trip out, covering just under 9 miles.

The first few runners are coming through.

DSC0001243.jpg

Starting to come past in bigger groups now.

DSC0001248.jpg

Runners going both ways now as the ones who have been out to Kingsland double back.

My cousin Duncan comes past (nearest the camera). We heard he'd injured himself yesterday, treading on a nail at work. Didn't stop him running though.

DSC0001266.jpg

Also on was Dragon Boat Racing. Didn't stop to watch much of it this time but have thoroughly enjoyed it in past years.

Big crowds for the dragon boat festival in the field below Shrewsbury School.

Just back from a quick ride out. I was going to ride the Wreningham/Hethel loop but got to Wreningham and felt knackered so headed right and towards home. Once on the Silfield Road I felt really good and as I approached the Wattlefield turning, I decided to add on the Wattlefield loop too. This proved to be a great idea but the last mile and a half were really hard work.
14.29 in 58:35. I had planned a nice 25 tonight but I felt so jiggered today that it didn't seem worth the slog. I'll probably not ride tomorrow and go out and have a longer ride on Tuesday while himself is at dialysis.
I need cake!

Couldn't resist the itch anymore, I had to get out on the MTB. SO, planned this little jewel.
http://connect.garmin.com/course/7009792#
stuck the Soul in the back of the car and set off. I've dropped half a stone in the last fortnight, and thought it would help, but my legs were like lead. I went through three 750 cl bottles, one High 5 Zero, one squash and one iced water, as well as a pint of lager shandy (yes I know!!) a banana, a KitKat and an SIS gel, and still needed to push up some 'orrible climbs.

The guide I read suggested climbing up to Bottomley then down to Walsden, but the climb up is technical, on paved bridleway, and the descent is on crap asphalt, so next time I'll do it the other way round.

There are some absolutely stonking descents, the one down to Walsden is a switchback, stone and drop-off techfest, the Mary Townley Loop of the Pennine Bridleway has some fantastic fast and difficult bits, and the descent to Watergrove from Rough Hill is a true belter of a boggy-stream-following-moorland descent with all the ruts and drops you can eat, and the PBW from there to Calderbrook is simply awesome.

I decided to ride the canal back to Littleborough from the Summit pub. Although the bridleway back to Hollingworth has some true delights, it's also got some "hike-a-bike" bits that I just couldn't face by that time. I therefore upped my protein intake by riding through the swarms of insects along the canal, enjoying a helmet free ten minutes at the end of a long sweaty ride.

The Soul behaved impeccably, and the travel indicator on the forks was up at the 110mm mark by the time I'd finished, so we'd both had a workout. Pics when I've finished loading them.
