After a fastish fifty yesterday, a pleasant relaxed 10 miles for me with the kids along the Middlewood Way was in order. We set off from Bollington and went to Middlewood Station and back absolutely no rushing:becool:. Lots of other cyclists and walkers on the trail. Weather was good:sun: and the kids didn't winge at all. They seemed to like it, which makes me happy as they are not comatosed in front of the TV or some tech device. Stopping for an ice cream at Higher Poynton probably helped and gave them a bit of a rest. Daughter was chuffed to see horses and a family of Canadian Geese and seeing her little legs spinning the pedals still brings a smile to my face. We do have some great family cycling opportunities in the area and I need to do more of them with the kids, they both could have gone much further and only having to go to a barbecue this afternoon stopped us making a full day of it.

With a hurty back and achy legs I set off on the MTB today, with a short visit to the J Arthur Rank, then I thought I’d see if I could find The Ridgway. I knew roughly wear it was, from Pangbourne over Whitchurch Bridge along the Thames Path Bridleway to Goring over the Thames again then follow the signs, which I did without any trouble at all.

The first mile or so of the Ridgeway from Streatley is a single track road, then it veers orf’t to the right and up a hill on proper dirt track, up and up then lots of fast down bits them some ups and more downs…great fun for about 6 miles or so. Then I came to a cross road and I could carry on along the Ridgway or start heading back. I was hungry and achy so I headed to Compton and found a pub where I had a sarny and a coffee, then headed back home along the narrow country lanes; 24.18 miles today.

EDIT: Some of the photos are from my Go-Pro mounted on the handle bar. Its set to take a photo every 60 seconds, I rather like the random nature of it.

Lovely... used to live round there and brings back many happy memories.

I also woke up to the sound of rain and I also ignored it and went back to sleep. So I got up later around 7:30am once the rain had stopped, and thought that I could have a lazy breakfast and be out of the house by 9ish... my electricity supply had other ideas and departed around 2 minutes into my nebuliser... I gave it a good half hour, but it failed to return, so I upped and outed to a house that did have electricity...

Not a lot happened on the way out - bright blue skies, surprisingly windy and gusty, cold in the shade, but within 30 mins I was too hot... stripped off my sleeves at a set of traffic lights I know well in Northwich, converting the long sleeved jersey to a short sleeved jersey much to the bemusement of the car drivers around me .

The roadworks that had been happening all of last week had me concerned that they were not finished. No road markings, no cat's eyes returned etc... on the way out I spotted a sign - worst fears confirmed. Whilst they have done a wonderful job and the joins are really good, regretfully they are now threatening to "surface dress" the road at some point in the next 7 days, weather permitting. That means one thing and one thing only, that really nice surface is going to vanish under a layer of grit and gravel and been utterly horrible for the next 6 months  - shame, because I was really enjoying the faster times than normal along that section of road! Even managed to get down onto the drops along that section the road surface has improved so much!

Coming home was 'interesting'. Squalls were the order of the day. Nothing showing whatsoever on raintoday.co.uk, but even as I was looking at it, I was looking at torrential rain which drowned the place for around 3-5 mins and then vanished as fast as it came. I chanced setting off without my waterproof on. I got, well not very far before taking shelter under a very big tree and putting my waterproof on maybe 700metres down the road! After the 3rd soaking I came across dry roads and oncoming commuters looking at me oddly - I could see what was coming, but it was behind them so would take them by surprise. By the time I got to Northwich, it was time to loose the waterproof and go back to short sleeves... such has been the weather today!

Can't wait to get Garmin Edge I might get a clean mile or half! Will try another extension as today was 5.7 miles , so slowly getting there. Was an enjoyable ride apart from swallowing a fly on the last part if the canal path !
Going for 6 tomorrow then I can concentrate on getting the time down.

I am so excited about having my new Garmin that I took it for an evening ride today without telling it where we were going. I just got it to record the route as we went. It didn't seem to mind. I rode from home to meet Hubster at the Norfolk & Norwich where he was lolling about, malingering on the dialysis machine, as is his wont.
I rode more than my normal 8.33 miles as I got there early having had a cracking ride down with only one red light to stop at all the way there. I didn't see the car in the layby so I rode into the carpark and looked for our car. I found it soon on and then rode up and down the car park 5 and a bit times until I saw Hubster come out. The extra upping and downing in the car park added over 2 miles on to the ride.
10.54 miles in 46:41 so averaged 13.6mph. I think that had I stopped at the layby as usual my average would have been a fair bit higher. I can't bomb up and down the carpark too quickly, there are too many entrances and exits being used and I'll get squashed by an ambulance or something.
A great ride. Can't wait for tomorrow. Fingers crossed for some decent weather.

A ride of 3 parts yesterday. The 1st part was the ride from home up to Sanford - 14 lumpy miles into a headwind.
The part of the ride was great. Out for a 15 mile loop with the kids development section of our club (EKRC). We had overly 20 boys and girls out ranging in ages from 8 to 12 and it was great to see them going round the quiet lanes with a few hills and quite a stiff headwind at parts. We had them riding 2 abreast and doing through and off so everybody had a turn at the front. Ended up with an average of 12.2mph and they all enjoyed it.
Part 3 was my ride back home via Strathaven and Hamilton. A nice cross tailwind helped my average speed up to nearly 21mph.

As if in a scene from a Brian Rix farce, I mistakenly went out today without any shorts on.

Well, what actually happened was I had time for a quick hour so got togged up and off I went. I live on a steep hill and by the time I got to the bottom of it I realised that my nether regions felt somewhat.....different. Turned out I'd put on the unpadded longs and then forgotten to pop on the shorts on top.

Decisions, decisions; do I turn around, ride back up the steep hill and pop on the shorts, or do I just go out unpadded for an hour? Off I went, unpadded. All was well apart from the lack of insulation on the descent back off the Snake Pass. That's 40mph winds for about 5 minutes. Not helpful, hot shower needed now.

Ha ha!

All being well, I will be heading over the Snake on a lumpy ride to Nottingham next week. I will ensure adequate protection for the ride!

I did 24 miles yesterday, only went to Otley. But for the first time on my road bike since early last summer,i did the ride in one movement, all the way no stopping.
It felt sooooo good. There has been nothing wrong with me,just that i have a friend that falls behind me,and i have to wait, over and over again. It felt so good yesterday.

I had better put a note to this,so i don't give a wrong impression. My mate and me have arranged to ride out once a week together at his slow pace,8-10 mph, then i go out again on my own at a faster pace.

I nearly didn't bother today, busy working at home, blustery and rainy showers, but I needed some dog food, and milk ( the milk is for me) so I went on the Whyte Coniston with the luggage. Christ it was windy on the way out, head wind and cross wind all the way, I wondered why I bothered. I got my bits of shopping amd weighed about 8kilos and I only had a pannier on one side so on the way back it was a bit lop sided, amd cross wind hit whilst going round a busy roundabout nearly mocked my sideways! After about half a mile I changed direction and I had the wind behind me the rest of the way, so I took a slight detour to mix the route up a bit. I enjoyed not on the way back 15:4 miles today.

I have to say my Whyte Coniston is a lovely bike, it feels so comfortable and refined, I'm very pleased with that purchase.

I do have pics but I don't have time to load them today. Sorry.
