Probably not qualified to quote as I'm still a bit of a newbie but initially thought omg! Some of the posts in debates and cafe are challenging and going for the jugular. However cycle chat has replaced my mills and boon, even Mr Gray has been given the heave ho for "light entertainment " before sleep.

So, for the most part cc has relevant and helpful topics re cycling and everyone is keen to offer good knowledge base, I also note how supportive everyone is especially when a crisis takes place.

Can't of course speak for everyone but I think the forum kinda takes most of us out of the humdrum and daily rubbish therefore we can take on a slightly modified persona and no one wants pistols at dawn.

And I still get to laugh!

You'd probably get the impression I am an incredibly argumentative person, but I reserve that for these kinds of venues. I'm somewhat less annoying in real life! I spend most of my time either researching and writing or with my wife and son, doing silly, ordinary things: riding and running, gardening, cooking, playing etc. However, I will stand up for what I believe in.

Yes, it really is time to update the avatar!

I got very chubby-cheeked in the years after that picture was taken but I have lost nearly 40 lbs since I got ill so I am slowly getting my slim face back.

My hair is half gone now, and what's left has a lot of grey in it.

At the moment, I still look a bit ill. It depresses me looking more like my late father than myself, so I will wait a while and update the picture once I am well and fit again. But in case you can't wait, I'll take a quick snap for you. (Where's me sunglasses ...?)

Hey Col. You're beginning to look like an advert for the benefits of Nimble again.

I am very laid back in real life and hope I come across like that on here. I don't think I've upset anybody apart from when I appropriated my dead neighbour's bike, a bike which, I am sure you'll pleased to know, has provided many miles of pleasure.

I do suspect that some of the more serious, angry, argumentative posts have a kernel of the poster's personality but a large measure of playing to a perceived audience. They wouldn't be as dogmatic or confrontational in a face to face meeting.
I've met a fair few CycleChatters and I'd probably say that, on balance, they are how they appear on here with a few exceptions. The ones I particularly like on here would be the ones I'd share company with in the real world too but it's a blunt tool (i.e. 'knowing' someone from the ether world.)
I'm too unaware to offer an opinion as to whether I am like I am on here although I feel sure @threebikesmcginty or @MacB will be along to set the record straight.

I'm not a great conversationalist, and my preferred role in social situations is to sit on the edge of things, occasionally interjecting with a comment to make people laugh. Guess that's what I do on here too. In fact I probably do it more on here, to get it out of my system
