At a work meeting down in Hemel Hempstead yesterday I saw four Red Kites, first one hovering near Toddington services then three more flying around over various green areas within the town. The must be more common down south than up here as I only rarely see our local one.

Yes. My son lives in Windsor, in quite an urban area. There are frequently birds of prey visible, particularly over a nearby area of Allotments, (I am not expert enough to identify type).

I live in Tyneside, in an area no more urban than my son. Other than the (very) occasional Sparrow Hawk, I have yet to see a “hovering” type bird of prey in the area. We do have an area of Allotments nearby, including plentiful pigeons (which I would have thought would provide the “prey), but, no raptors to be seen.

This amazing looking creature I have no idea about but it was in a nest box I needed to clean out. Took me a while to work out which was the front.

I really wish I'd had my phone in my pocket this morning. Before going to work I always check the bird feeders on the patio, peering out of the garage window I spotted that the peanuts needed topping up, so I grabbed a pot of nuts and out the door I went, striding (not exactly stealthily) down the patio to within about three feet of the feeders, before noticing a particularly fine looking Goldfinch sat on the nyger seed feeder having his breakfast. The little bugger never budged, at least not until I politely said 'excuse me'. Then he flitted a couple of feet away into the bush and sat there while I topped up the peanuts! I've got out of the door before whilst various feathered visitors have deliberated whether to take flight or not, but never got that close to anything.

Well, you won't egret it.

I'll get my coat.
