iNaturalist suggests that the mystery fly is a Mottled Thistle Fly (Xyphosia miliaria).
Body length 5-8mm, wingspan 15-18mm, lives in meadows with thistles, hedgerows and woodland edge, fairly common and distributed evenly throughout Britain, usually seen between May and September.

But the Yellow Berberis fruit fly Rhagoletis meigenii has the correct wing pattern. Body length 8-10mm, usually seen July and August.

A little wander around the South West Coast Path this afternoon

Well, write it down boy ......

Right at the risk of making me look foolish (in my defence I am a novice but am willing to learn), without resorting to Google
1. Comma butterfly
2. Red Admiral butterfly
3. Peacock butterfly
4. Meadow Brown butterfly
5. Long Tailed Tit
6. Jersey Tiger Moth
7, 8, 9. Gatekeeper butterfly
10. Comma

Marks out of ten? (I often get Gatekeepers and meadow browns mixed up).

I agree with eight of those (which doesn't necessarily mean that you've got eight correct, we could both be wrong). We differ on numbers 6 and 8.

Easily done, especially in real life when the buggers won't land and give you a good view. @Dave 123 spoils us with the quality of his photos.
