They just boom out with song, lovely stuff. I'e heard them a few times, often deep in bushes or hedges near lakes or water. Last year I actually saw one...and they'e quite small, quite nondescript birds.
First one I ever saw was along the driveway at Minsmere. It sat on a branch not 3'away in plain sight and sang for me. It was amazing.

We rented a villa near Cala sant Vincente in Mallorca four years ago. We would wander up to the end of the driveway and sit on the wall and listen to them sing. That was the place with stone curlew in the field, and you could sit on the loo and watch hoopoe in the orchard.

A couple of grey partridge behind our house yesterday - always a pleasure to see.

On a sadder note, we’ve found 2 hedgehog carcasses in the same field- both badger kills. Hedgehog numbers significantly down here this summer. The thinking is the dry weather has reduced the availability of badgers preferred food of worms and snails so hedgehogs are a protein rich alternative. We are devastated as we’ve spent years feeding hogs and releasing rescued ones too. One of the dead ones was one of our released ones.

Anyway, a couple of pics from last nights ride

A half decent sunset at Wicken Fen to the sound of grasshopper warblers, cuckoos and drumming snipe among others

A couple of (poor) pics of some of the glow worms I saw a little later. They’re hard to capture on camera! Saw 13 females (flightless and glowing) and 3 males (they fly but don’t glow).

There were probably lots more. I once saw over 100 here on a moonless night - a truly magical sight.

Oi, Glowers, I don't think selfies should be allowed!
