Quite possibly, Sandwich was a medieval trading port and for a long time afterwards so that would make sense. I can recommend the medieval museum there.

I seem to remember that wool from England was often traded to Flanders and the ships would bring bricks back to England as ballast; eventually the brick making and bricklaying skills also made the journey, hence some lovely early brick buildings in the east of England.

That would make sense. Of course the Wantsum river would have been navigable then too effectively making Thanet an island but an effective route for the Dutch after leaving the North Sea. I will investigate.
