I use it a couple of times a year. Free parking in St Ives, ride to Cambridge area and catch the bus back. (free with my ol' farts bus pass)
The buses have wheels on the side as well as underneath and hack along at a fair speed, with a driver but no hands on the steering wheel.

There's another one that runs from the main rail station out to Trumpington park & ride and also has a very usable shared path alongside - much shorter at about a couple of miles, but a good way to get to the south western side of the city (and near the Grantchester area where you were from your other photos)
