& yet, the character of the boles from the rooted branches is so different to the original, you do wonder if claiming them to be as old may be stretching things...

No, just look at old Douglas Firs or Ginko's, the old bark is amazing and far more interesting than when they were up to 100 years old.

Yes. Today I rode around the loop drive at Saguaro National Park in Tucson, my old stomping ground, some 45 years ago. In a world where it seems that everything is changing, it was like a time capsule - hasn't changed a bit. And I saw a Gila Monster:
