I have a WW2 version and it has the same inscription.

I guess in WW2, most ordinary Germans in the army would be Christian / religious, but some of their leaders had pagan/anti religious beliefs. Power and religion are usually different sides of the same coin.

i mean if you were a deity wanting to wake folk up, wouldn't you think it wiser to pull a stunt in the centre of Paris, London, Rome even, rather than some two-donkey village?
"Ev'ry time I look at you I don't understand
Why you let the things you did get so out of hand
You'd have managed better if you'd had it planned
Why'd you choose such a backward time and such a strange land?

… If you'd come today you could have reached a whole nation
Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication"

Thats one way to guarantee a god given victory
yep, like that old woody allen joke (Bananas?) - bunch of paratrooopers in a plane on a CIA mission - someone asks which side they are fighting for this time - one character, maybe woody, says that this time the CIA are going to make sure they get it right - half are going to jump to fight with one side, half the other lot.

God is supposedly omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent.
He is also apparently timeless.
If that's the case, you would have thought that he would have arranged for all the religious nonsense to have occurred at a time when humans had developed mass worldwide communication.
By having the Bible and the Quran authored before such a time, he has also demonstrated omnibumbness.
God is Homer Simpson. QED.

well he could still have shown himself long ago somewhere big of course. Lots of advanced ancient civilisations. And some of these saint appearances are pretty damn recent - but of course still usually in out of the way places, or places that fancy boosting their tourism.

Ah, but mass worldwide communication just means we pay less attention to things, whereas the old orally transmitted texts (still amazing to think that the Koran and the Odyssey were spoken, not written) have endured in our minds and cultures for thousands of years. It’s hard to imagine that, if God revealed him/herself today by doing a Tiktok dance, people would still be retweeting it in 4021.

I've a sneaky feeling that the Quran and the Odessey have been written down many years ago.
If God didn't foresee the invention of the Internet, he can't can't be omniscient, can he? If he didn't use it to prove his existence to as many people as possible, and therefore 'save' them, he can't be omnibenevolent.

With a name like Church, I don't do religion...
Nonsense by definition.

Nothing to be ashamed of at his age. You can get Viagra without prescription now.
It was mistakenly thought you could get Viagra before without prescription, which lead to a lot of older gentlemen visiting A&E with their hands embarrassingly attached to their old chap. The product known as "Hard As Nails" as since revamped their marketing strategy to compensate...

That was Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher who came up with that nonsense.
Pascal's Wager was only referring to the Christian God - not deities in general.
What if you spent your life believing in Jesus.....only to find out that Allah is the real God? (Or vice versa).
Well, if it's Judaism, it's generally held that you'll be fine if you uphold the 7 laws of Noah. OK, Christianity has that weird trinity thing going on, which means that actually the most admired "other" religion classically is Islam. Which makes sense, as both Christianity and Islam are effectively Judaism with added bits.

Islam has the "people of the book" thing, so you might be fine too (I'm not so up on Muslim theology, though).

So from a Pascal's Wager standpoint Christianity might be best - but which Christianity?
