It didn't. The whole of South Yorkshire was within old West Yorkshire, plus little snippets from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
As classic33 had pointed out a few posts above!

That is what I meant - which Riding was what is now South Yorkshire in. I think I had seen a map in the past but the combination of ageing and health problems has really been bad for my memory!

I was very surprised a few years back to spot an old boundary sign at the top of the Trough of Bowland saying that it had been in the West Riding.

I'm not surprised that people were upset by the boundary changes imposed upon them, and AFAIK, the older residents of places like Todmorden and Saddleworth still consider themselves to be in Yorkshire!
