I think I'd go for the Viner. Good spec - 50/34 chainset 11-28 cassette. Very light - 7.55 kg! Can you get to Sheffield to try one? Otherwise I like the look of the Specialized, but note it has a semi compact chainset - 52/36. Tyre size is not that relevant. You may not find much, if any, difference in the actual measurement of the tyres fitted, though it would be good to be able to fit wider tyres if you want them - check it out - up to 28's maybe. I'd be changing them to GP4000s anyway.

Viner looks tempting, but as someone suggested before, it's not a bad idea to go with a local shop. I tried on giant a few times and I really liked the feel. Also, from what I was reading there is not much of a difference between 105 and ultegra. Just a bit of extra weight, but mostly same materials and technology. Also managed to get a 100 off voucher code for the giant bike and will get another 145 in rutland rewards to spend in the shop (I need pedals and shoes). So this sort of brings the price down to 1300.

Good choice @AmishParadise . Imagine telling someone you've got a Viner they'll think you've got a set of cutlery.

What ever you choose I am sure you will have fun. But you won't find many on here using Halfords for servicing. I had their mechanic try and insist that a gear and brake cable were the same

Yes. But the 'Viner' models Planet X sells have nothing to do with the original company (1948-2012). They bought the name, trade off the heritage, but the frames are the same far-eastern models they sell under various other names. Nothing wrong with the bikes per se (well, some are better than others) but that rankles a bit with me...

you might also want to consider the fact that specialised bikes are among the most prized by bike theives (along with pinerello)…
