I wouldst rather people spell the words as the were intended.

As who intended?

They say that when you are young, change is modern and exciting. When you are middle-aged change is resented but accepted and when you are old, change is evil!

I started the thread in humour but with a serious point I suppose. Change is inevitable, but some form of agreed structure is required. Sometimes I have problems understanding what my children are on about when they speak to me e.g. "aghanagghha anhaggh like anngghatrhg" would seem to translate as "I hate you, I want to live with someone else", but I know if they write this down it would say "I hate you, I want to live with someone else".

What is going on?

People seem to have accepted the use of 'wrong words', e.g using 'of' instead of 'have' - I would of said, rather than I would have said.

I had not really noticed this until recently (it coincided with me buying pyjamas and slippers )..another one I noticed at work was someone using 'howanever' instead of 'however'...WTF is that all about!

On a chat site I go onto there is someone who says 'wrong' when he means 'incorrect', 'e.g' when he means 'for example' and uses a dash where a colon should be.
He also split his infinitives and used a '!' instead of a '?'.

In my day he would be flogged and buggered for that.

I'm not getting as picky as that. I have not a clue about grammar and that stuff TBH.

But I do think it's important people can at least recognise what words they are using.

Funny how people who imply that change in language should not be resisted are usually careful to spell their words correctly and obey grammatical rules.:smile:

I wouldst rather people spell the words as the were intended. 'of' instead of 'have' is just people being lazy and writing as it could be said in some accents. I like regional accents but FFS at least try to spell it the accepted way. The word is not 'of' it is 'have'...

whatever innit. Modern spek drives me nuts innit. grrrrrrrr I suppose its one of the results of culteral diversification whatever that is . Once upon a time we would have stood together on a hill somewhere , arms linked bearing our wode with pride prepared to repel all johnny foreigners..........Damn ..got summat inmi eye

Can we get rid of the word 'cool' please? In the work situation particularly, it is grating. And when two or more people use it in conversation, it just makes them sound like a bunch of pigeons!

And while we're at it - people ending their sentences with the wrong intonation pattern, so that they 'rise' in tone on the last word of every sentence a-la Neighbours / Friends - which is probably where they picked it up from!

I am really glad this thread came along!
