Amazingly enough, we just had a great big bumble bee at out back door. A little sluggish but he buzzed off after a minute.

She. The lone, surviving queen is one of our earliest out foraging. I have seen a few on crocus recently. Most likely Bombus terrestris (buff tailed). I love bumble bees.

She's been hibernating somewhere in your house - must likely loft/roofspace and unseasonably warm weather has woken her early.

Unseasonably warm? Where, pray tell? Queen wasps hide in the folds at the tops of curtains and in log stores. When they emerge, a quick wallop with a shoe or rolled up magazine prevents the birth of thousands of the little barstewards. I'm not sure why they exist but neither do I know why estate agents exist.
