Worn chain/chainwheel?

I've got a new "used" bike on the stand and the chain won't sit correctly on the chain wheel, as seen below:

You will not be surprised to know the chain is very worn; the rear mech is also very erratic. I'm guessing the chainwheel is worn beyond usefulness, and that being the case, the bike has lots of other problems so we'll probably strip it down for parts.

However, I'm aware I may be missing something:: does anyone else have an alternative idea of the cause, and a possible solution.

First thing I'd do is to measure the chain. Looks like its pitch is now just too great to sit on that worn chainring (and the inner). Likely the tooth wear has been caused by an elongated chain.
Great photo (and well done for taking it without faffing around cleaning the rings before taking it).

indeed its gone very very "sharky", you could turn the ring around and get a few more miles out of it maybe, but given its so worn and the mech sounds dodgy too, I'd just salvage any re-useable parts

Were it my bike...
New chain and chainrings without question. Personally, i see no point in trying to extend the life of either, they're a consumable, they want replacing every now and then, 'just do it' is my motto.
Once those have been replaced, any excess wear (and there may well be some) on the cassette will soon be evident. Be that the case, then replace cassette.
Or just replace the lot (as Teamfixed suggests) , belt and braces approach.

I had a colleague who used to commute by bike. I used to talk with him about chain wear and maintenance...nah,he replied, i just replace the lot each year, still a damn sight cheaper than driving or bus fares.

Looks like its all been said if the chainwheels and chain are like that, it makes me wonder what else is worn out?

Many thanks all, it's good to have my diagnosis confirmed.

The bike is a very elderly Specialised Rockhopper; probably not bad in its day but now alas, a bit battered. The maximum we'd get for it is about 65 € which is pretty much the minimum I'll sell a bike for.

Possible beater / pub bike?

Looks like the chain's been lubricated with waxoyl
