With cassette fitted (no spacer), lock ring spun on in 3 revs, i.e. bottomed out.
Fitted the spacer and cassette, but there's not enough of the spline exposed for the smallest cog to bite into. i.e. the spacer is too big. I need a 1mm spacer.

An alternative approach might be to use one of these (with the 1.85mm spacer), which has a couple more mm of thread. Jeopardy is that:
  • the 11sp sprocket isn't engaged with the freehub splines
  • the 11sp sprocket is real close to the drop out.
Am not recommending this but found it in my explorations.

Great news!

However, where life in the before-times once offered anticipation, excitement, intrigue... in the wake of this development I now feel only the cold vacuum of the void - its unfathomably black chasm yawing open toward the infinite; as if to devour my very soul like the jaws of some gigantic, inescapable, mythical sea-creature the mere existance of which no mortal man has lived to recount..
