Hi Norm
I have just bought some spd shoes but have not yet plucked up the courage to get the pedals, the more I read on here the more I am convinced they will really help my cycling so will be getting some soon.
Not sure whether to get the single or double sided yet though,am erring towards the double.

M520's FTW

Thank you to both Simon's (without the C)

I bought the shimano M520's too from chain Reaction at £20 a bargin of a price to pay. I was rahtrer suprised at how small they look on the bike

I've had a few outings and I'm very impressed with the switch from normal pedals to clipless, the change is huge IMHO ... I still have a little bit of tweaking to make to the cleats until I find that sweet spot, but I'm not far away.

I do have one or two small muscle aches this morning, but that's down to walking around on a stiffer soled shoe, rather than the flex of normal shoes, but they will adapt

I've also had to make small adjustsments to the saddle as the shoes I bought have a more of a raised sole than the shoe's I've been using while cycling.

Please if you're thinking of making the switch to clipless, then the guys who have already made the change are right, I don't think I'll be going back to normal pedals again.

Thank you once again to everyone

Clipless is cool. I still stumble getting into them now and again but they're much easier to get used to than straps. Nearly "cliplessed" it a few times but that's down to me trying to trackstand instead of just unclipping.

Downside, I now require a "pub bike"

good luck Norman. Just remember to twist your foot out sharply and very firmly before you stop. You may need more force than you think when on the bike. Hold onto a wall and practice before you set off
you'll be fine

Good Luck!

This is making me want to get some now, but my stops are quite frequent for the first 5 miles of my trip, so it might be a bit awkward.

I didn't even make it out of the shop with my bike before my first m520 related-incident =(

Thankfully, I didn't take out the display completely, and it was of kids' bikes....

I came off on the cycle path in Palma, Majorca. Still don't know why, doohh, but was up n out pretty sharpish. Another time had to find a fence very quickly at a road junction when shoe bolts worked loose and I could not unclip. Now check them regularly. I've not got into unclipping with my right foot [after 3 years] but it's something I need to work on for such occasions. Would not go back to toeclips.

I'm not going to be far behind you Norm ... 2 E-Mails this morning confirming that both shoes and pedals are on route to my house

Simon (c-less)

Simon you'll love them, they take a little bit of getting used too, but thats only minimal, like many of the fellow posters have said , slacked off the tension on the pedals, and click in and out a number of times before venturing out on the roads ... that's sound advice the guys have given

I wish you luck in making all the right adjustments to the cleats / pedals and hope you enjoy going clipless as much as I'm doing now

MY dignity is gone  .. had me first clipless moment yesterday of my own doing, while looking down to check the gap between my shoe's in relation to the crank arm, while braking to come to a stop near the kerb, I toppled over, much to the amusement of my wife and 1 year old grand daughter  .. oh the fun of it all ;)

Thank you to the many posters who have helped me make the switch / confidence to going clipless ... "Group Hug"
