Presuming you aren't looking for waterproof, Gore will be good. I much prefer Altura over Endura on 'build quality' - I have got a couple of Altura windproof jerseys (albeit women's ones), both about £40 from what I recall (Evans sale can be good)

Gore don't fit me, they are too tight on the body and way too long on the arms - designed for cycling orang-utans it seems (I have some very good Gore tights though)!

The Gore Phantom is a very casual fit - mtb not road. I tried a small and it was massive around my chest and arms (though the arm length was good). Yet according to the sizing guide with my 36" chest I should have been a medium. The Gore Oxygen is apparently much more of a road/race fit, but I haven't tried one.

So for a middle aged rotund bloke the phantom XL should fit just right then ^_^^_^^_^

I have a Gore Fusion jacket and love it - the nearest thing I have found yet to that elusive breathable-waterproof combination. It is MBT cut, which makes it looser arond the shoulders etc, which I very much prefer to the race cut style.

I've had a Gore Phantom for 4 years - excellent. I use it during the winter months and it is fine for sub zero rides. It is shower proof and it takes a good 30 minutes of steady rain before it surrenders.

I've got a couple of Gore Phantom jackets and love them. Being able to zip the sleeves off makes them a good all round bit of kit. As others have said they are mtb specific but I've seen quite a few roadies wearing them and not looking out of place.
