They are very good - quick to respond to any questions as well. My jacket should arrive today.

I ordered that jacket from Prendas on Monday afternoon and it was delivered by Royal Mail yesterday (well sort of - I wasn't in so I picked it up from the sorting office this morning). Great jacket and superb service again from Prendas. It's almost always next day delivery with Prendas, which I find is quite rare these days with the likes of Wiggle, Ribble, etc.

What is it for? Waterproof? Windproof? Warmth?

I wouldn't say the Gore Phantom is MTB specific. Maybe not race cut, but we are talking about a winter jacket here. It's way too warm most of the year, but when the temperatures really start to fall, it just goes on over the summer jersey and you don't need need anything else on top. You can extend the useful temperature range a bit by zipping off the arms, and wearing it with thinner, less windproof arm-warmers.

I think the mistake people sometimes make is in thinking they can have just one jacket that'll be right every day through the winter. I've never understood people (mostly commuters) wearing (magic yellow) waterproof jackets even when there's no sign of rain. I bought and returned the Gore Phantom as for me the fit was horribly baggy, but I could tell that I'd only have been wearing it on the very coldest of days anyway. The Santini one from Prendas on the other hand is closer to a jersey with some windproof panels and other non-windproof bits so it'll work on all but the coldest of days (when I can wear a gilet and/or arm warmers for a bit of extra insulation) or when it's pissing it down (when I can wear a proper waterproof jacket).

I still think a l/s baselayer, s/s jersey, roubaix arm warmers and a windproof gilet is about as much as you need on most winter days (plus bib tights or bib shorts + leg warmers obviously) and is more flexible than any jacket.

Sometimes, I read things that people post and the only thing that I can think is 'Why?'

If it helps, Dags, the question was directed to the OP rather than you, although amaferanga's post might help if you do genuinely yearn for greater enlightenment.

I've just ordered a gore oxygen GT AS. Around from about £135 depending on the colour size you want. I have an altura at the moment but I've lost so much weight since I bought it its a bit of a sack on me.
