I get Raynouds as well & use 'extreme cold weather mitts' (British Army issue) - inners for down to about +2, then if it gets colder or rain/sleet/snow, the outers as well which are goretex.

+1 Cant agree more with this. I get reynauds too, most rides, even in mild weather ill have white numb fingertips.

My setup uses the british army goretex outer mittens, cheap as chips on army surplus, think mine cost 7 quid.

Then for the inner mittens i bought some balls of merino wool for about a fiver and had my good old mum to knit me some mittens!

I have spent hundreds of pounds on gloves to stop the white finger over the years and these are the only ones that do it so well!

Not the easiest to turn lights on with or change gears, but well worth it for comfortable winter commutes!

If you can get hold of set, I thoroughly recommend them. They don't look 'cool' but your hands & fingers don't stay 'cool' if you know what I mean. Other posters on here have talked about ski gloves/mitts - these are similar & definately the way forward. In my experience cold/wet weather cycling stuff is rubbish - especially sealskinz.
I'm inclined to agree with your last sentence Hedge. I bought a pair of SealSkinz gloves from a cycle shop. They were clearly labelled "Winter cycle gloves" and cost £31.99. Within a mile of my first (7 degrees) cycle with them my fingers were very cold and my hands clammy too. I took them back and I've now got a pair of Gore Countdown III gloves (£45) from them. These have a Goretex membrane so hopefully clammyness should be avoided. Hope to test them out this weekend. IMHO when producing gloves at these prices for such a specific market manufacturers should be urged to quantify what they mean by "Winter" and "Breathable".

When I returned to cycling after 14 years off the wheel the first winter was a shock. On one occasion, being desperate, I used the Belstaff motorcycle gloves I normally wear while riding pillion with Mr Hamster.

I still don't have any proper winter cycling gloves, but am getting some for a belated Christmas pressie this week

I always sound like an aldi advert but I have a pair of their ski gloves and can't wear them for cycling cos they're too warm, so you may get on with them if you suffer that badly.

Aldi have the snowboard gear in at the moment so it may be worth calling in

Good luck

Well, the Gore Countdown III gloves I mentioned earlier seem to be a lot warmer than previous examples and without being clammy either. But as mentioned in a separate thread, sizing leaves a lot to be desired. These were a large size but required an effort to get on and my hands aren't particularly large. Trying the extra large size results in rucking-up of material on the contact side of the gloves. I sort of get the feeling there's an element of Harry Enfield's "! Saw You Coming" about this subject.

I've just got (literally) a set of Sealskinz Mountain Bike gloves. No problems this morning (altho it was only 0.5C - so quite warm relatively!!). Didn't need to add a set of silk liners and had lovely toastie hands!! The ones I bought from Aldi this year just weren't cutting it at these sort of temperatures in Dec '10. Got the new ones for £20 so very happy (and so are my hands). Sizing wise -just use a tape meaure and Sealskinz chart and you won't go wrong. Fingers are a just a fraction on the long side for me.
