Oh, and another perfectly good tyre for £10-£20 is Bontrager Race Lite hardcases.

Agreed on this too.

My Giant Hybrid has a set of these on, mormally with a pannier rack and child seat, often fully laden. They cut up a little, but that doesn't seem to affect the protection. I've just got my first puncture on them at a level of wear that tyres should never see. I persevered as an experiment.
