You get rain, hail and storms ect. in summer, so is hardly depicted by weather, it's a season from 21st of Dec to 21st of Mar (though the equinox varies slightly from the 21st to the 22nd). ;)
this year it lasted till may

Can anyone recommend a soft shell-type jacket that doesn't give the boil-in-the-bag effect? Putting a Lidl/Aldi one on again after a ride is akin to shoving your arms up a fish.

How much are you wanting to spend, FWIW I like my Endura Jetstream the most, I've also picke up some good Giordana kit half price in lbs's which is better for really cold weather but for breathability I prefer the Endura.

I'm learning that buying cheap can be a false economy. If it was a jacket I'd also get general use out of I could probably run to £100 off my next payday

IIRC
My Gore Phantom was £99 (Don't like the fit though)
The Giordana's £80-100 (full price)
My Endura Covert was £99
and the Jetstream £45,
Cheap Aldi ones,
Out of my lot I'd rate the Endura best for breathability.

I also have an Endura Urban Softshell (£90) its perfect for commuting but not as technical and an Aussie one but I dont know its availabilty in the UK.

I think the OP is looking for lower cost than Rapha. I know you ride pro for Sky but we mere mortals have to buy our own kit

No, no, no you just don't understand Rapha do you - I mean just looky here now....

....for just £220 you can get a highly technical boil in the bag jacket that has wait for it.......

........contrast details at the neck and the hem so you can work out which is the top and which is the bottom in a hurry.

I think that this is where you are going wrong. You are just not understand these game changing design features.

I'm quite happy to buy value for money items but, for certain stuff, I've found it makes sense to pay out. Goretex waterproofs certainly make a difference, despite the pricetag. I play golf (yep, shoot me) and, a few years ago, bought a £300 set of Goretex waterproofs. They've never failed yet even using them on the Three Peaks Challenge where we got absolutely p***ed on for several hours on Snowdon. They're light, breathable and waterproof. I even use the jacket on the bike - it may not be perfect in the sense that it doesn't have the longer tail but otherwise it's a very good jacket, even for cycling.

I think you wear what a) you can afford and b) what you like. I was in Evans today and just browsing the Sky collection, £15 for a pair of trainer socks is too extreme for me but the cycling top was only £45. I think as with every other form of clothing you will always pay a little more for certain things but if you can afford it and you like it then its all good. I for one will be buying more Rapha gear just not the socks haha
