As my Triban 540 is broken and I will be sending it back for a refund, I need a winter bike.

Spec. (essential)
  • proper mudguard mounts
  • to take at least 28 tyres
  • light weight (I have to carry it up two flights of stairs)
Spec. (nice to have)
  • Shimano groupset
  • internal cabling
  • disc brakes
Budget

Must be less than £1,000

Ideas?

Thanks for the suggestions V and ND. The PX London Road was already top of my list of possibles. Any others I need to consider?

What about the classic winter bike, the Ribble 7005 Winter bike, Sora, starts with Rodi wheels etc, £620, , gives you plenty of room to spec up the wheels etc.
Never had one but these have long been seen as the ideal and very well priced winter bike.

OOI, how is it broke?

Very broken. The chain broke and the new one does not move correctly to the small chain ring. Initially I thought I must be doing something wrong so I took it to a good LBS and after a week they they failed to get it to shift properly either. They said it seemed to be a design fault. Decathlon did not argue, paid all the bills and will (I hope) take the bike back next week. While this was going on they discontinued the 105 10-speed version. Pity as I really liked the bike.

I like the Ribble Winter Bike I bought last year. A long way under your £1000 limit - had caliper brakes but no idea if this year's equivalent will have disc.
