What's a 'sixpence'?

My Carlton with Weinmann 500s stops on a sixpence. Hand pressure needed to operate them is higher than modern brakes but put a bit of effort in, they work fine.

Agreed. I've had the back wheel up off the ground before using the Weinmann 500 caliper on the front of my bike. You need quite a firm grip on the lever though, so not suited to small hands.

I currently have some modern aero brake levers on order to put on my Dawes, which I suspect will improve the braking power further.

Look I just want to clear this up. One does not stop on a sixpence, one turns on a sixpence. It is a very small coin with a small circumference so to turn on one would be impressive.
To stop on a sixpence would be very dangerous I suspect. If one could go from moving to zero mph within the diameter of a sixpence I think yoy would damage yorself considerably. So there.

^_^ A small trip over the bars, anyone?
Earlier in the thread GB brakes were mentioned. The GB Synchron, side pull, dual pivot, just like brakes now produced by leading suppliers. Excellent kit, made by a company that produced aircraft parts, to a similar level of quality and finish. They really worked, light action and more than enough power. The manufacturer stopped making them eventually, I think, they were well priced and so good that there can't have been a lot of profit, but what a design. Years ahead of their time, and light years ahead of anything on the market then.

Look, I just want to clear this up. A light year is a measurement of distance not of time so to say that the GB brakes were "light years" ahead of there time doesn't make sense in this context. Come on people, I don't enjoy being a metaphor Nazi you know but you leave me little choice.

Really, well happy Christmas anyway...I'm sure you know (as other readers will also work out) exactly what I mean.

I'm only joshing. I don't really mind people stopping on sixpence or waiting light years for something. It was just pretend pedantry. Sorry if it looked like I was cross, I'm really not. Thanks for the Christmas wishes, it must have worked. Hope you're having a lovely day too.

Terrific - out on the bike for an hour, up to the top of the local big hill, back down, cool off, shower, knock up a bit of lunch, neighbours in, couple of small sherries (!!), good feed but not excessive, and afternoon laughs. No telly, wonderful.

Years ago I had a Carlton which had Weinnman brakes. Can't remember if they were side or centre pull, but they were CRAP compared with modern brakes ie Hope discs, Deore SL V-brakes, Shimano Ultegra or Campag Chorus brakes. I used to crap myself if I had to stop sharpish despite regularly stripping and lubing them to get them to work properly. They were just crap. Sorry to all the Luddites but they were.

I bet if you put the same type of brake pads you were using years ago in modern calipers they'd be equally as crap!

Brake pad technology has come along a long way, and modern brake pads used in a set of quality Weinmann calipers improves the braking performance drastically to something perfectly usable. The only downside of the Weinmann calipers is that they're a bit 'flexy'.

I recently tried out a friends bike, which has some lower end Weinmann calipers with the original brake pads, and they were shocking! For only £5 I put in some modern brake pads by Ashima and it's a massive improvement.
