I've just noticed what appears to be corrosion or erosion and/or a potential crack on the derailleur. Any idea what might have caused this - maybe just age?

Looks like it. I wouldn't call that a potential crack, but a complete failure that is due very soon.

Just how ? I've front mechs that are not far of 35-40 years old that work. Oil and a wash.
Mine is 11 years old this June but my bike gets quite a battering courtesy my hobby. Flying around the countryside taking landscape pics demands navigation of very dirty and rough surfaces, hence the dirt and sad patina.

I'm going to replace the derailleur - cheaper than I thought. I've found the exact model model without a band adaptor and one with.

My old derailleur appears to have an adaptor and I'd like to re-use it as it's guaranteed to work for size. Question is - can these adaptors be re-used?

If the adaptor to allow a braze on FD worked with the last one, it'll be fine with the one without a band.
(Two types (in this respect): band-on and braze-on.)

That's the reassurance I'll need - the old adaptor wouldn't be permanently fixed to the old clamp.
