Why is it recommended to refit the tyre next to valve last?

I've done it both ways and have no preference but I think the theory of valve last is that you can push the tyre bead down into the well of the rim all the way around without the valve getting in the way, you can also use the valve to push the tube well into the tyre to avoid catching the tube with the levers for the last bit on tight tyres. I have changed a lot of motocross and enduro tyres where a bit more effort is required.

Read the OP people ! I Think some of you are talking about the inner tube (which obviously is fitted valve first) whereas the OP asked about the tyre.

As far as I can see people are talking about the tyre.. ie fit at the valve first, then work round.

And the answer is that the last bit of the tyre bent on is the bit most likely to pinch the inner tube when 'snapped' over the rim, and doing it at the inner tube valve means you can use the valve to push the tube up into the tyre reducing the likely hood of a pinch. Also if the tyre is tight, the inner tube bit with the valve makes it harder for the tyre beads to sit right next to each other in the centre well, as the valve is in the way, making bending the tyre onto the rim harder. I've always fitted tyres valve last, and have no trouble lining up my logos either!

Good answer and the other reason I can think of is that by the time you've gone around the tyre you may well have pulled the inner tube a bit such that the valve is no longer straight.

I always fit the tyre next to the valve hole first to ensure the label lines up with valve as per rule 40

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Rule 40 is for tossers - as are all the rules. Goody and Svendo are absolutely right, and there are some tyre/rim combinations (including the classic Brompton/M+ combo) where valve-last is absolutely essential.

For over half a century I have always done valve last. It is just one of those things I have done and never questioned why. After reading all the other people's method of valve first perhaps next time I have to do one I will try it.

In between here and there
I always fit the valve first. Seem's to work much easier that way.
Me too and then push the valve up into the tyre to avoid a pinch

Valve first - that way I can ensure it's correctly centred in the rim

I also fit the tyre around the valve first, then holding the wheel valve up, work my hands down both sides of the tyre simultaneously. This makes fitting even Marathon Plus tyres surprisingly easy .

Always tyre on at the valve first.

Never had a pinch puncture. Never used a tyre lever to get a tyre on. That includes Marathon plus.

In my experience this exercise should be avoided at all cost. If the rubbery thing that covers the wheel loses its air it is much more convenient to buy another and put the deflated wheel out by the bins. The chappie at the local bicycle emporium lets me have the whole thing (rubber cover and all) for just over $250 and this has only happened three times this year and I never once got my hands dirty or worried if the valve (is it?) comes first.
