I reckon no more than about £100 on a ten grand car, with the rest made up on manufacturers bonuses, commission from the finance company and any extras the buyer can be persuaded to have.

On this "What's you best price" cobblers, I reckon anyone who has ever run a business dealing with the public would happily blowtorch Dom Littlewood - himself a former second hand car dealer from the dodgy end of the market.

Reading it back now my post reads much ruder than I intended, sorry.

I know that everyone haggles when buying a car and I hate that too, its a nonsense. If everybody haggles why bother? Just post your 'best effing price' on the ticket and save everyone the pointless waste of time.

I agree, wholeheartedly...as a seller but as a buyer I would retort...so as a bike seller you never discounted 2010 models as the 2011 came out?

With the Internet I don't think list price of anything can be protected, instead we have to give a balance, a lower price and better service, just not as cheap
as online but better service than online.

I'm quite relaxed at the whole haggling thing, and like a bargain. I once literally got a mobile phone contract free, which still gives me a warm glow when I recall it. However one thing I struggle with is the same retailer operating two sales channels with different prices at the same time. Like a well known photographic shop which has one price in the shop, and another online. So you click a mouse, roll up at the shop to collect exactly the same camera and save a shedload of money. I can't really get my head round how that works.

Try buying a discounted Brompton.

Good point, there are a few products and brands which manage to become so desirable they can name their price. There is a lesson in that for everyone truthfully.

Most car dealerships struggle to get a 2% return on investment which is very poor on a like for like business size comparison.

More to the point, you don't even have to do your research beforehand. Choose product in shop using salesperson's knowledge/experience, ask them if it's cheaper online, if it is go to site on smartphone there and then and click on order. Saved about £100 on a telephoto lens and a bag that way.

Or a C2W price-bracket Cube.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Recent example - Shimano Tiagra 9speed cassette - bike shop 39.99, Ribble 16.76. I am fitting it anyway. My income is static/falling. Sorry bike shop, I am buying online.

Since my original posting I seem to have had a lot of response to my question. Some of it I appreciate and some of it I found to be offensive. Sorry very thin skinned.I now have a better understanding and others comments on being a skin flint given their experiences and in some instances agree with what has been said.
Thankfully like you really appreciate my LBS and LBS 's everywhere. If we ever lose them we will be lost.
They supply a service that neither the internet or bigger outlets can provide.
Just as an illustration of what I am saying. two years ago my eldest grandson wanteda BMX bike so my daughter wanted me to go with them when they brought it. Against my better judgement she wanted to go to Halfords and would not listen to my protestations that is where we went.Thankfullythey did not have one in stock that he liked and so I was able to persuade her for us to go into the LBS which we had passed on the way to Halfords.
Well guess what when we went in there the grandson immediately saw one that he liked and given it was within the price bracket we had, we brought it.
So naturally when we took it home to see whether we had paid over the top for it we went on the net to check it out.The good news was that we could not have brought it cheaper anywhere else and in fact we had been given a bargain.
Rather than keep this good news to ourselves I wrote a letter to the local paper about our experiences which they published to the following week.I am pleased to say that two years later and in these times of recession that little shop is still trading so hopefully others have had the same experience I have had.
Finally at that same shop I can buy consumerables ie tyres inner tubes at a lower cost than Halfords so why would I want to go anywhere else.
May I politely offer the suggestion of the preview button and the odd comma?
