I don't understand how people can put up with the rubbish picture. My brother spent £2500 on a Sony TV. The picture is terrible. You can watch Sky HD which looks good, but is it any better than my CRT TV? I don't think so.
+1
CRT wins hands-down, IMHO.

I don't really understand it but whatever. Those things basically dominate a room and turn a 'living room' into a temple to the TV. Well I guess if you spend hours a day on a bike, spend two grand on it and get a fancy bike - if spend hours a day watching TV, spend two grand on that and a fancy TV.

You might save some space by putting your flatscreen on the wall, but you still need floorspace for the vcr/dvd/skybox/freeview/speakers/etc/etc...unless you pin them all to the walls too.

I mainly watch films and sport. Both are superb in HD.

Your post suggests you haven't got/seen HD Simon?

One of the two.

As for football in HD, I wouldn't pay a penny to get a TV equipped to show it. I just don't see the point. I can see that HD might be better for the generally poor picture quality of large flat TVs, but if you are happy with the superior CRT picture quality of a 20 inch screen then HD is not worth buying.

If you're an end-terrace you can just knock out the wall and save a few bob by wedging your CRT in it. Awesome picture quality.

I know what you mean Greedo, it looks stoopid in small rooms IMO

I couldn't for the life of me watch a game of football on a 20 inch screen. If you're happy to do so, please continue.

A 20 inch screen is as good as any TV for watching football in my experience. The large screens offer no benefit in my experience, except the ability to sit further away from the screen, for example in a pub.

Christ, what a lot of snobbery!

If you watch a lot of TV, why not spend a bit getting a good one? Say for instance the TV is in use for four hours a day (probably an underestimate), and that the TV cost £750ish. That's around 50p/hour if you spread that cost over the first yeat. 10p/hour over five years.

Putting it over the fireplace makes sense as sofas etc will often be against the opposite wall, and it won't get in the way there.

Your experience must be quite limited, but, in any case, I'm happy for you and your 20 inch tv.

I agree. I can't image that anyone who has had any serious exposure to HD could possibly say that.

The biggest driver of HD in the US at least is actually sport. football (soccer) is certainly much easier to follow in HD. One of the main effects of HD is to gain a far more accurate 3 dimensional understanding of an image.

So am I. I'm happy that you seem happy with your jumbo TV. This is a chat forum for opinions. We don't need to keep telling each other how happy we are with everyone else's opinions you know.

As a very experienced TV football watcher in pubs and at home I know I wouldn't waste a penny on a large TV for my living room. If my 1989 20 inch Toshiba ever pegs out I expect that 20 inch flat TVs will be about £29.99 and I'll get one of them if the superior picture quality CRT ones are no longer available by then. Certain sections of the population have always set great store by the size of their TV screen and the availability of reasonably priced large flat TVs has overexcited them. What surprised me about this enthusiasm was that the new flat TVs originally had an appalling, smudgy picture quality and even now they aren't as sharp as a CRT TV.
