Ah but that doesn’t look external. @Dadam indicated there are external combustion steam cars.

Steam engines are always external combustion. There is a boiler producing the steam that drives the vehicle, and the combustion is what heats the water in the boiler.
Not quite true.
There were fireless steam locomotives which used steam from a "reservoir" to provide the motive power.

Used in situations where the use of fire wouldn't have been safe.
