I decided to challenge myself to ride everyday to work for a year. So i did and have done so ... I now have 2 extra bike and have spent huge money on clothing , shoes extras...

I am the happiest I have ever been, and look foward to my ride to work and back home everyday. My family say my stress has dropped and whilst mad I am a better person.

Why did you start again , if you did !

PS now weight loss that was my main aim but lost 2 inches on the waist but gained 2 inches on the thigh

Money. It was really tight, and my monthly tube pass went up to a yearly spend above a grand. And I'd always been a keen cyclist in my youth. So I decided to give it a go. That was seven years ago. I love it when I see the Evening Standard billboards: 'FARES UP AGAIN'. The more they go up, the more I'm saving! Sad, huh?

Mind you, now I'd definitely cycle regardless. If I saved nothing, I'd still cycle. In fact, I can't imagine what it would take to stop me cycling, short of disability thru' injury or illness. All being well, I'll die in the saddle! (When I'm 112) Yee-hah!

my prompter was that my cheap student bus pass was coming to an end (no longer student). So when it becomes £520 for a year long bus pass, vs a sortof keep fit and be able to go where you please when you please rather than knowing the timetables backwards, with work doing a cycle to work scheme...
I never really cycled much as a kid, had the bike but was never allowed to go far with it. So basically an adult beginner. Doing bit for environment, keeping fit (ish) and hopefully saving money longer term... (first year probably not as getting the bike and all the other things you need probably trumps my £520 bus pass. Although, taking my £26 pm gym into account...!) And, of course, it's actually faster than the bus especially if you take walking / waiting into account.
Been going strong since June last year.

(and, as Swee'pea says, now I'd keep doing it regardless of the money)

Health reasons initially. Then sort of got the bug and decided to commute, then got rid of the second car. Now planning to do some touring by bike. It's costing me more than I realised but will stick with it - learning to do my own repairs to keep costs down.

I used to live in Dublin and the majority of my office cycled and I ended up cycling too. I then started to use the bike for leisure and got hooked.

I also used to live in Dublin and cycled everywhere as a student. I loved being able to see things around me but make reasonable progress under my own steam. With adult children I was no longer needed as a taxi and started to cycle my son's awful mountain bike. After this I bought my own bikes and started cycling longer distances. My furthest was round the Isle of Wight.

The missus was quite ill during her pregnancy, and needed the car. A bike was cheaper than buying another car for me so I started to cycle to work everyday = nothing like no choice and a 20+ mile commute to build some stamina

Now 4 years later, I ride to work anyway (despite working at the same place as the missus who drives in every day). Saves nothing, but still puts a smile on my face every day.

I had to give up football, then running and needed a low impact sport to keep fit and now I'm hooked and my hips don't suffer.
For the last 5 years my wife and I have cycle toured all over Europe too which is the best holiday ever, from the winter planning to the actual event.

Here for rides.
I needed to get fit to ref rugby, and wanted a low impact way to do it, and the cycling bug bit such that sometimes I put riding over reffing!

I wanted an excuse to get out side more often, become healthier and also to try and quit the fags. Also to cut down on the wasted time in commuter traffic. It saves me the best part of an hour each day and I feel much better for it, even while being soaked by our lovely weather.

Got to the age where sat of the sofa being a vegetable is more dangerous than riding a bike on the road.

+2

I've noticed that my general energy levels are much higher now (after the first couple ofmonths of arriving at work barely able to stand!).

Haven't noticed any reduction in my waist, modest weight loss, but my calf muscles are huge!
