Friends of ours rented in a village down here for six months when they moved out of the southeast. They found village life far from the picture they had in their minds and eventually bought in a small town and now think they had a lucky escape.

It could be worth spending some time in a preferred location before buying to see if it suits you.

Can you start looking when we've found somewhere please - you've hit our ground zero!
There are some nice properties on the outskirts of Minehead with great views, but can imagine it's heaving in the summer.
Yep, we're aware of the roads and how long it takes to cover few miles, we're regulars in that area in our Campervan....
Looking already........

I lived at Timberscombe near Minehead for a while, always seemed to be raining and together with the rather grim looking [grey] sea it wouldnt be my choice. Tivertons OK Tauntons too big n busy, My choice would be where there's fewest people! usually means less hassle ^_^

Having spent much of my youf socialising in both Dulverton & Bampton, Dulverton would be my choice without a doubt. Both of these have the full spectrum for grocery shopping requirements. Very few of the surrounding villages have a shop. Wiveliscombe is another worth considering?

Milverton has a good community vibe and an outstanding bicycle repair shop!

I'd probably go for Dulverton or Bampton, but possibly Porlock.
Wasn’t it a “ Person from Porlock “ who interrupted Samuel Taylor Coleridge as he was composing Kubla Khan ?

As an incomer (16 years ago from Warwickshire) I live in West Somerset, 4 miles along the coast from Minehead. Each to their own and all that, but personally, I do not recognise the above comments at all re this area. Fantastic countryside, Exmoor, superb coast, and whilst it's not a "blue" sea, that's simply because it's the second biggest tidal reach in the world. ... and as for fewer people, it's one of the the least populated areas in England, certainly lot quieter than the Tiverton "metropolis". Great for cycling, walking, fishing, paddle boarding, whatever floats your particular boat, plus, of course, the best cider in the world. Also, whilst we "suffer" holiday makers in the season, this is at a lot lower level than the Devon and Cornish hotspots, plus London / rest of the "civilised" (you know, all the shops you may want, traffic, congestion, etc., etc) world not a million miles away with mainline staion at Taunton and the M5 etc.

Whilst I work in Taunton, I personally wouldn't want to live there, but that's mostly down to the fact that I was born in a city, then moved to a large town, then a market town, then a village and now a hamlet (theme developing here).

Fab Foodie, PM if you want to ask any questions fella, happy to try and help fella.

Will people stop mentioning Dulverton please….
Wood's Bar in Dulverton is excellent, as is the cake shop on Northmoor Road.
The chippy is OK as is the deli.
Tantivy's an interesting shop and cafe.
There's a couple of places in Dulverton that would suit us at the moment - but I won't be moving for a year, or two.

I was going to suggest Milverton or Wiveliscombe.

Both nice places with a big village vibe, decent pubs, excellent cycling country, easy enough reach of Brendon Hills, Exmoor, and Quantocks.

Plus Wellington not far for bigger shops. and nor so far from the M5 corridor.

Bit less chocolate boxy, and touristy than Dulverton .

Poor old Tiverton..

But yeah its a bit dire..
