When I started commuting in London in the seventies suits were required at work. I found that decent trousers and saddles didn't work well together. I quickly destroyed several expensive trousers whilst the jackets were just fine.

So reverse it. Wear the jacket, tie and shirt and some cheap trousers or thin lycra tights and do a quick swop in the loo before going up to the office. Both can roll up tight and suit trousers carefully folded don't completely destroy the crease.

Or do as I eventually did so it didn't matter if it rained or I got a bit sweaty - find some locker space and go completely lycra and do a Clark Kent!

Heh. When I use train+bike (2 miles at home end and 3 at work end each way) I don't bother with cycling clothes. On one occasion I was working out at Penistone, and had used the train, so didn't have cycling kit. Missed the train home, and they're like less than one per hour, so I had to ride back to Sheffield where I could pick up a train. 15 miles in suit trousers (no jacket, but business style shirt) did cause a bit of chafing!

It's a bit more complicated than that...
@User did an FNRTTC to Brighton on his clown bike Brompton in a suit once. And a splendid hat, IIRC but sadly I can't find any pictures of the event. There was a degree of coarse language at Ditchling Beacon.
I did Southend on a Brompton in an evening suit a couple of years ago. With proper shoes - none of @User's SPD nonsense for me. At the time it was an evening suit that was much too big for me.

I always commute in my suit, although recently as I've started wearing leather-soled shoes more often I've started wearing trainers. Sweat isn't a problem - it dries quite quickly and only smells if you leave it for a while.
