Just to add a slightly different slant. I only use my road bike for training, club runs, sportives etc. I probably made the same mistake you did - in that I bought a pair of 105 spd-sl pedals and stiff soled road shoes. However I like them and don't think it was the mistake that it appeared to be for a start. I rarely walk any distance and cleats have been lasting for almost a year.

Well folks i took the plunge and went for the look pedals. The shop put the bike on a trainer and spent 30 minutes fitting the bike and showing me how to mount/dismount,including of course the cleats into the pedals.

Great power delivery and i rode the bike home around 10 miles.
If i want to walk around with the kids - well i always have my mtb with slicks

Get some cleat covers. It doesn't make them great for walking, but it protects the cleats really well and gives you some vital grip.
I have look keo on both my bikes and so even when I'm touring I'm using them... being comfortable on the bike is your first priority. Good choice.

Grip is indeed vital. On yesterday's soaking-wet ride I walked into the coffee shop and nearly fell on my arse. As if it wasn't embarrassing enough looking like a drowned rat.

Thanks for the tip about cleat covers. I saw them in the shop and thought they were a con,but obviously serve a function

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
It is worth buying Keo 'grip' cleats rather than the plain plastic ones, though they are more expensive. The plain ones can be downright dangerous on tiled floors, granite kerbs etc. Make sure you are carrying an allen key that fits your cleat bolts just in case of emergency. The covers are OK, though I find them a faff to use, so tend not to, but a long walk home even with covers would not be very pleasant.

Which is why I always use SPDs.

Shouldn't smile at your mis-fortune, but the image in my mind of this made me!

went clipless today, got halfords spd pedals which were £35 - 20% and got a pear of muddy fox shoes for £25 from the sports direct ebay page. fitted them after work and im liking them, shoes are comfortable and clipping in and out was easy enough to get used to. also walking in them was just like wearing trainers, theres just a slight noise if the cleat hits the ground when walking but its nothing really noticable

I've got SPD-SL pedal/cleats, I picked up my little girl on my way home and walked about ¾ mile with her. Aside from walking like I'd been needing the loo all afternoon, when I got home and removed my shoes all the bolts were loose. Lesson learnt, covers ordered and always check your bolts before each ride.

I just take my Road shoes off(Rain or shine) and am lucky enough that I only have a 200m walk into the office and vice versa. My cleats are looking a bit sorry for themselves and thats just putting my feet down getting off the bike(Keo Look 3 bolt numbers). I had an incident with the Muddy Foxx Road shoes were the bolts came loose, and I ended up on the floor with the shoe still attached to the bike and myself lying about 5 foot away!!!! I got a set of DHB's from wiggle on sale for £35 what a difference!!!!
