I picked up a Voodoo Limba cheap in Halfords.
They're not that common, but are really something special. Lovely lightweight frame, Shimano 105 STI levers, chain and cassette, carbon fork, chunky bars and very knobbly tyres. If you find an older model it'll have carbon stays too.
RRP is £999, but they're going to have to start discounting them soon
The wheels are the only weak part - I've just replaced them with a set of Shimano RS20s.
Cross bikes really are the best of both worlds. I have a set of Specialized Crossrides (38) on the old wheels for towpaths and dirt tracks and Schwabe Blizzard sport (23) for commuting.
The biggest problem a lot of people have with cross bikes is the brakes - front brake judder can be a real problem. The Voodoo suffered badly from it, but I managed to cure it with a mixture of stronger wheels and by fitting a fork mounting cable arm and hanger (cost for the two parts around £10).
