Or... How about looking to see what you can find in salvage yards etc...

My dining room is done in beech from reclaimed school desks (a carpenter friend cut the sections into tongue and groove), while my sitting room is done with a recycled mahogany ballroom floor that just needed cutting to size before being re-fitted.

All they need is a bit of polish (I use beeswax) and a buff with a soft cloth.
