Ah, I looked at the Tourney because my wife's old Marin has that but I didn't realise you could get the direct bolt on version.

I keep the bike in Spain and there is a huge (anti-flood thing) kerb I have to get the loaded bike over and despite lifting the back a bit it often catches the cage slightly so I thought I better not go any longer just in case it gets damaged.
I don't understand, how is the cage getting caught, if your lifting the rear wheel over an obstacle the only thing that can catch the RD is from the side, unless its brush ect or unless its something that needs careful negotiation.
However I have just re-looked at the picture and there is damage to outer part of the parallelogram which wouldn't make any difference being long (MTB) or medium (road) though many can be intermixed.

I just looked it up the Altus is a higher groupset than Tourney so I would go with that.

Too late now! I've already gone for this one. http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/ro...aa0sFUQZknZzfebHSMLlthoCHIjw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds Hope it fits...

You're right about not damaging the cage on a kerb. Although it does look a bit scratched up from rocks and things, it's the front chain ring that gets clonked on that particular kerb..
Prey tell me how you manage to clonk the FD on a kerb, its the same, the chain/chainrings will take anything first unless from the side.

Sorry my mistake! It was the chain ring not the mech as I mentioned in post#15. What will be the problem with fitting the Sora? Looks like I'll have to put it on fleabay :banghead: I wish I'd known about the Altus earlier!

The Sora is a 'road' RD and you need an MTB one. It'll physically 'fit' but the pull ratios are different (from your shifters) so the indexing won't work.

Edit: Trust him vvvvv; he's a doctor: non-10 speed special case. Assume you bought the GS version.

No, pull ratios are the same for rear mechs. It's front mechs where they differ.
But (there's always a but!) 10 speed MTB rear mechs are different...
But a Sora 9 speed mech should index fine.

Just to rest this old thread- it did fit perfectly and complete with a new wheel and chain which Mrs Podge who is not podgy at all I'd like to make clear (on pain of death!) somehow managed to squeeze into a single 20kg suitcase, has transformed my Spanish rat bike. So thanks to you all!
