To the op - have you ever heard of the "One Mile Solution"? Idea is you draw a radius of a mile around where you are, and try to do things by going on foot to local shops etc.

Yes - have heard of this. We live in a 'village' part of the Derby suburbs and have most amenities within a mile (docs, dentist, chemists, supermarket, garage, library, post office, pubs(!), hairdressers, assorted smaller shops) we can go a whole week sometimes without getting the car out once. In fact, when I'm not commuting, I have to make myself get the bike out sometimes for variety or I would just walk everywhere.

Most of the time, I'd rather walk than get a taxi any day. Partly the expense, and partly I miss the exercise. The week I had to taxi to work after my 'off' had me itching to be back on my bike asap. Before that, we hadn't used a taxi for about 5 years.

I know I'm the same it's a waste of money and loss of some free exercise, maybe if I'm short on time or the it's more than 5miles. Generally have a bunch of audiobooks on the MP3 player so enjoy the chance to listen to them also, which I miss on the bike (hats off if you can enjoy War and Peace while navigating rush-hour traffic tho!).

I reckon I could manage within a kilometre (my work and friends are outside that though). The joy of living in the city centre...
