Wheelsets - some advice please

50mm Carbon tubulars though will be lighter and faster than any similar priced clincher. So if Musa is up for going with Tubs then for £500, which would include very good tubular tyres at £50 each, then he will have a 1400gram wheelset that is more aero. I can personally vouch that they out perform Ksyrium elite and Fulcrum 1 clinchers. Both similar priced.

I think he said he wants clinchers though - besides which, tubs are not really practical for everyday use, although some people do use them.

Yeh agree, i have two other wheelsets which i would use rather than repairing the tubs when i got home. Tyres aren't cheap either but imo having a set is worth it. Performance wise i find a noticeable difference. To get a clincher wheelset at a similar weight you would need a grand and 24mm profile. To get a clincher wheelset of a similar weight and 50mm aero profile you would need to remortgage the house.

Or order from the likes of Dengfu or Far sports as i mentioned above. They do a 50mm clincher (carbon) that weighs about 1300 grams for around £400 - about £450 shipped to the UK. Far sports actually offer 2 year warranty but imo it would be more of a pain in the arse. It's a gamble but if it pays off then you have one hell of a wheelset. Oh and they are ALL no logo.

No argument from me there. Having said that, I would probably rather have a set of 38s for circuit races, but nobody was making them at a decent price until fairly recently...

I'll search the forum for the thread 400bhp

The only reason I 'm against tubs is the hassle of the tubs itself, repairing and purchase.

Wishful thinking at this prior moment

I was just thinking that. Far sports do a 38mm tub @ 1080 grams for £400. That would be nippy out of the corners! For less specific use i think 50mm is best of both lightweight and aero worlds. 38's are tempting...............

I was the same. I tried and liked lots. Some people ride ONLY tubs and claim it's the only way to go. Others say why bother when clinchers are so good these days. Only one way you will ever know and they won't break the bank. :hungry:

I run Zipp 404 firecrest clinchers with a 58mm rim depth as a 'everyday wheel' on my Venge and race on Zipp 404 firecrest tubs, I really rate them both but like B&Y says I also agree that the rim depth is a bit much for a 'everyday wheel' and not without compromise.
This is why my latest everyday wheel has a rim depth of 32mm, and I can't rave on about my new wheels enough.

Yea the new Zipp 202 firecrest wheels with Sapim CX-RAY spokes and ceramic speed bearings.. incredible wheels.

You welcome to visit when you like, provided I'm not on holiday... mind you I'm also coming up your neck of the woods this year (Fort William) and bringing bikes if you wanna catch up

Nice wheels. A fan of Zipp you are.........You must have one of those special money tree's. I've tried planting many pound notes before but nothing seems to work.

Now when you say my neck of the woods, fort william is a bit of a stretch. 102 miles from where i reside to be precise.
Though the lure of some venge-esque bikes running Zipp carbon and (no doubt) di2/Super Record is more than a little appealing. I could take a little holiday in the Scottish sticks if i was coerced. Damn, i think i would even cycle there! ^_^

Out of interest, had anyone any experiences to share on the different braking performances of carbon vs alloy rims?Wet and dry conditions? I've always shied away from carbon rims due to perceived poor braking.

Also, basalt braking surface? What's the difference?
