I have quite often thought of trying.

I understand that due to the individual's non access to bulk buying discounts it will be more expensive than buying a mass produced wheel.

Rose bikes has some pretty amazing prices on built wheels - often I think cheaper than the price of the individual bits.

Anything to be said for just buying one of their wheels and then tweaking if necessary?

Apologies if this is a sacriligious question.

I bought some hand built touring wheels from Rose. Couldn't buy the parts as cheap as a built wheel and with the free postage on them at the time probably was nearer £50 saving.

Tried building three wheels so far. 1 ok, 2 didn't turn out very well. Will give that Ebook a read though. Interesting stuff.

These wheels are indeed cheaper than buying the individual components. I bought a couple of sets of these wheels ( which are machine-made) and then checked/adjusted the spoke tensions and de-stressed. While the wheels were true I found that the spokes were not of uniform tension and required stressing and de-stressing. All good quality components though, Tiagra and Shimano LX hubs with Roses own rims.
Quite a saving at approx. £80 for a wheel-set.
