What's your discipline?

Touring on your own is OK as well. There's something very liberating about setting off in the morning and not knowing where you're going to be sleeping that night.

isn't going to university much the same experience?

Varies from year to year.
Last year it was XC mtb racing, all mountain, and road, with a bit of touring
This year it's touring touring touring (I'm doing a tour a month!).
My other half is threatening to buy me a stick on beard and SPD sandals...and frequently laughs and points at me on my tourer.

You need a nice big pump to get plenty of air in your rubber

I wouldn't mind having a go at cyclo cross, but I fear I'd be far too unfit nowadays. And I'd never find the time.
