I say it is fluky gusty winds that cannot make up its mind what direction it wants to come from. Just come from a 10 mile ride where there wasn't a moment where I wasn't riding into a head wind.

On the bright side though, it gave me a good work out though.

Falling off your bike into a bunch of stinging nettles

My sister did that when she was about 5 years old, wearing just a pair of shorts. If I recall, she thought it was worse than cycling into a headwind too. I can still hear the screams in my head and remember the hives and how many tins of Wasp-Eze my mum sprayed on her. Poor little sausage. She's forty now but I bet she still remembers.

In my experience, heavy side winds are worse then headwinds.

Headwinds are bloody hard work, especially if your route is directly into a relentless headwind.

But side winds are/can be very dangerous. I have been downed by a side wind, when fully loaded on a long tour (that wind actually blew over an artic lorry moments before I passed by).

Leaving without overshoes or waterproofs, getting drenched then freezing on the descents not being able to regain any body heat.

Cycling all the way to work in a strong headwind then realising you've left your lock at home.

I did that last week.

Cycling into a cloud of midges more dense than a block of lead. Three times. And not having any glasses.
