This is one of those how long is a piece of string questions. It might be OK but, it might not! We have an allotment and are so king under the weight of various pickled onions, jams and chutneys.

Hang on, I'm just going to look in the fridge....

....Beetroot chutney 23 August 2011 is this week's vintage! I always jar up when the stuff is really hot and it seems to last for ages. Is there anything growing on it?

If you decide it isn't worth the risk, can I offer you any newer stuff? We've got sodding loads of it! Please have some. This year's will be made soon. Help, please!!

When I find food that is 6 years old it goes in the bin . It has never entered my head to actually put it in my mouth .

I'm about to drink some of my last 1984 vintage elderberry wine.

I've got pork joints and mince in the freezer (from my own home-reared pigs 2007-2010) that I really should defrost and cook but the longer they stay in there, the more I wonder if being frozen for that length of time will have horrible toilet-based consequences for me, so I leave them in there and then another year goes by and I think to myself that I really should get on with the defrosting, cooking and eating but....

In a similar bind here. I have more cherry jam than I know what to do with, blackcurrent, blackberry, cherry & apple chutneys. The spicy blackberry chutney didn't last a year so I need to make more of that but the others..... Peach chutney anyone?
