Actually, one of my colleagues on the MSc course found the head first book online for free. It's here: Head First Android Development. Can really recommend it.

Yes, I found free copies of it but I suspect that they are not LEGAL free copies! I would rather not download pirated material so I won't take a chance on them.

I have seen some books made available free as ebooks by their authors, with printed copies available if readers want to pay for them. I think that is quite a good solution because many people would still rather read paper books, but would have the chance to check out the books before purchasing.

As for what the postman brought me today ... A copy of Xara Photo & Graphic Designer version 10. I have been using version 5 for years but didn't fancy paying the full upgrade price to 10. Version 11 has just been released so Xara are clearing the old stock of version 10 at the bargain price of £14.99.

One of those things you buy that may never get used.

My first pair of SPD shoes, to go with the pedals he brought earlier in the week. But I wasn't in so I'll have to collect from the sorting office tomorrow and wait until the weekend for my inevitable first clipless moment.

Just out of curiosity have you tried the stuff you shrink with an iron? Never used it myself.

Shaun

I've tried Litespan and it was a faff. You have to apply Balsaloc adhesive to the balsa, let it dry then apply the film. I't doesn't stretch so covering curved surfaces involves cutting Vs out of the covering and pulling it round the curved surfaces. It does shrink taut but there always seems to be some 'give' in the flying surfaces.

All of my freeflight models are covered in tissue. Some of my combat control line models have been covered in nylon fabric - when they crash the nylon forms a neat carrier bag to take the pieces home in. I have some silk that I am thinking of dying and using on a vintage model or two.

Thanks, I'll stick to tissue on the little Merlin that is very slowly taking shape.

This month's copy of Aeromodeller and the latest, yet to be released CD and DVD of some reggae artists that the sender knew I liked.

Yesterday had parcels from Alpkit (bike pack, lights and straps),CRC(11-spd chain, morgan blue chain cleaner, swisstop pads and rim cleaning block),

Also went to sorting office for the Fabric saddle from Hargroves.

Ooh, a nice surprise ... I had ordered something from a company on eBay and was told to expect delivery Tue - Thu, but postie knocked on my door at lunchtime today!

I have lots of pairs of cheap earbuds and a cheap pair of headphones which I use on the TV, but I wanted something better to use in my new attic music studio so I splashed out on a new pair of 'phones. I did think of paying over £100 but decided that would be overkill for my ageing ears so I settled on a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M40X headphones which I found for £69.

They come with 2 removable cables, one coiled, one straight. My last couple of pairs of decent headphones had fixed cables which eventually packed up after a few years of use. I'd repair them but they always eventually failed again. With these new phones I can just plug in a replacement cable. I found replacement cables on eBay for under £10 so cost would not be a huge issue and have one spare cable to start with anyway!

I have been watching music videos on YouTube this afternoon and I am very pleased with the sound quality through the phones. The boxiness and lack of extension of my cheap phones is replaced by lots of bass, lots of treble and a pretty smooth overall response. They go loud enough that I would surrender before they do. They are very comfortable for over-the-ear phones on a big head like mine. I think I'd want to take them off for a minute or two once an hour to stop my ears sweating too much, but I am supposed to get up and walk about regularly anyway to keep my blood circulating properly.

I am very pleased!
