About 14 quid on a bottle of Cloudy Bay chardonnay. Very underwhelming.

I bought it as my missus' cousin owned the vineyard at the time (got bought out by Veuve Clicquot a few years back) and thought it would be a nice surprise for her. She didn't like it either!

As a wedding present my father in law gave me a case of his own (1st Sauternes, perhaps £200 per bottle to you.) from the year I was born, 1959. At the wedding we decided that by the time we should have been drinking it we were all too drunk to appreciate it, so it's waiting for another event worthy of it.

I've had some very lovely wines on expense account dinners, but nothing over £80 .
On a personal buying level though there is a big difference between the £5.00 bottle of quaffing wine and a bottle of £20.00 in the supermarket, especially when it comes to reds.

I occasionally buy a bottle of wine for some special event but as I know nothing about them I just choose whatever I can afford at the time, but not more that #10 max!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe we need a red wine thread, with tasting notes and bargains spotted.

No - definitely no screw tops...;)

I agree rikki - a bit like Jane McQuitty when she writes of a bargain at Somerfield or other affordable vendor.

Greedo and User482 on the management committee then, Kirstie sec. and archivist - the rest of us can be tasters!!!

35 quid for a bottle of Alsace Gewurztraminer, the name of which I've forgotten but which was undoubtedly the best wine I've had yet. I went back and got the last three bottles the shop had. I've got a case of 1990 Chateauneuf du Pape, Clos des Papes which I got for 88 quid the dozen in 1991 and from what I've read I guess the shop price would be around forty odd quid a bottle now. It's OK but definitely not wonderful.

I'm up for that!

Some decent knowledge and choice of wines kicking about. I'm impressed.

As much as I enjoy the collecting side and the anticipation of opening certain wines in years to come there are some great wines about for between £6 and £15. Certainly within most peoples price range.

Kirstie sounds as if she had a brilliant childhood.

About £7, excludfing restaurant buys. I'm a bit of a cheapskate, I guess
And having spent 3 years (nearly) buying perfectly palatable wine in Spanish supermarkets for a bout 50p, I'm suspicious of overpriced-ness  Mostly, you're being had.

Aye it wasn't too bad but pales in comparison to what my dad did in the 70s. He had an absolutely fabulous time! He spent most of it travelling around Europe, tasting wine, dealing with top restaurants in the north west and dining with the growers in their chateaux. Lucky man!

I'd agree with some doing that. In particular "Cloudy Bay" Sauvignon Blanc which needs to be sold young. He is ripping the ar$e out of it the prices he's charging for the standard of the wine and it is shocking tbh. He's created a brand and while it's a pleasant tipple it's not worth £22ish per bottle.

However a producer who takes care, time, love and stores their wines in barrels to mature before release is not. He needs to cover his costs.

Does anyone know the name of the off licence that was featured on the programme "Chateau Monty". The shop looked huge and the owner was called Cliff. He bought 25 cases of the wine.

Would like to check out the shop next time I'm in London. Looked good!

I saw a sign outside an offy that read "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy"...or was it the other way around? Anyway, it was clever.

Ok, I'll kick off.

Chateau Soussans 2006 Margaux, £7 from Aldi.

If you're looking for an introduction to claret, this is a great choice at the price. It has the typical red berry punch, but also some of the smooth tannin and length that you only tend to find in more upmarket wines. I suspect it may benefit from a year or two longer in the bottle as it seemed a bit "shut in", but it's drinking ok now. Went very nicely with steak.
