I usually wait until Tescos have £15 bottles on half price, you can bag yourself some quality Bordeaux then.

Once spent 100 French Francs (those were the days - pre Euro) in tiny restaurant in Fleurie (Beaujolais) .. the wine was so good, we ordered a second bottle. When we had sobered up (late next morning) we figured out they had only charged us for one bottle.

£100

I have a couple of very fine clarets and a vintage champagne at home that are being kept for future wedding anniversaries. The trick is to make sure I don't open them in the next ten years.

I once ordered a £35 bottle of wine in a restaurant, but it was the work christmas do. My boss still wasn't too happy.

He was even less happy when he found out I had ordered £10 cigars for most of the table.

Very nice. We may have a bit in common.

I love wine and so far have put myself through the Wine and Spirit Education Trust to advanced level. Last course I done I was the only non trade person doing it. Most of them thought I was mad just doing it as a hobby as they were all $hiting it if they didn't pass, and had to go back to their employers and tell them they had failed as it was £400 and one day per week for 12 weeks.

Next level for me is the diploma which is a 2 year day release course.

Good for you! So far, my education has been limited to three two hour sessions at Avery's wine merchants in Bristol, so you're much more educated about wine than I am. Beforehand, I'd always thought that after £15 or so, you couldn't really tell the difference. Then I tried a £40 Chassagne Montrachet, and swiftly revised my opinion...

I haven't tried any wines at the £80 - £100 bracket yet so I'm really looking forward to opening the ones I listed. Sadly, I'm going to need to wait a few years to enjoy them at their best.

I've spent £40 for a good bottle of champagne once, a little less on a bottle of this, however the best thing I have ever drunk was a Cuvee Sylla from Borie de Maurel - and at only £18 an utter bargain - since he recommends keeping them for up to 15 years, I would get a case and put it down now if I was going to drink it. Michel Escande is quite my favourite wine producer and everything he makes at whatever price, is fantastic. These days I never buy wine except if I have friends over or am going to dinner somewhere. My wife doesn't drink, and I can't really ever drink more than a a couple of small glasses, which means opening a decent bottle of wine is a bit pointless.
