It's a trade-off isn't it. If we venture into reductio ad absurdam for a moment, then we can see that a solid tyre would have perfect puncture-proofing. It would also give a horrible ride.
Weight off the wheels, and this obviously includes tyres and tubes, gives a massive (proportionally) improvement in ride quality, but thin tyres are bound to be more penetrable.
You pays your money, you takes your choice.
I have Bontrager Hardcase on one of my bikes and they are very good for puncture resistance (not perfect - I have punctured them, once) but a heavy and dull ride. Since I ride only for pleasure and do not need to get anywhere, I prefer a lighter and faster tyre, and put up with the odd puncture. My favourite tyre for ride quality is the Panaracer Pasela, but they have such fragile sidewalls.
After putting a tyre lever through the sidewall of an Equinox on Christmas Day in the dark and rain (I live it up!) I found myself in
Halfords - open on Boxing Day, thanks - getting "Your best, lightest and fastest tyre, please" which was a Schwalbe Lugano. I know they have a poor reputation, but I find it great. I would imagine the Duranos would be even better, but as I said, it's a trade-off.
